Self Defense in The UK

So it is everyday that I learn about something else that I am not allowed to do, now another one.

It is illegal to carry any Taser or Pepperspray in the UK, regardless of how low the lethality is. I was well aware that high voltage, high current Tasers designed to be lethal are clearly banned.
Regardless of voltage, owning a tazer carries up too 10 years in prison, that is not even DISCHARGING it.

Really though, even peppersprays?

What is our options for self defense? My partner was assaulted 2 years ago, quite badly while on her way to college, the person was wielding nothing more than a Stanley blade.

What options does she/we have to protect ourselves?

It seems the only way we can be safe is to either never go anywhere alone, never go anywhere dark.

Anyone got any ideas?

Sorry, I thought it said "is it" illegal.

I know what you're getting at but generally they say it's not good to have a knife as it might be used on you, etc.

Yeah the way the law sees it, if you are carrying a weapon that is legal, the attacker might be also.

You might get overpowered and lose control of said weapon.

Are there any options at all for self defense? Besides going full on karate or kickboxing...

Having a weapon doesn't really help most reasonable people, as you need to be willing to actually use it. So yeah, make it legal, you'll get a couple of people use it responsibly, but you'll also get those who lose them because they won't pull the trigger and those who use them at a moments notice over little silly things.

I think the only real solution is to live in a better country. :)

So what you really want to know is, are there any weapons you can legally carry?

Well, I don't think it's illegal to walk along with a hammer for example, so just put one of those in your man bag.

If I could move, I would.

I would move somewhere, a place that I have the right to shoot the guy stealing the TV in my living room.

The main reason why people irresponsibly use knifes and other weapons, is the fact it is kept from them, a mystery. Bring up a child around knifes, how to use them, maintain them, it becomes a tool. Not a weapon.

Hammer is illegal, having a screwdriver is also illegal. They must be contained in a secure toolbag/box.

I am not really asking what weapons are legal to carry, I personally do not look at say a multitool as a weapon. I have a damn good multitool with a decent sized blade on it, I carry it everywhere. It is a tool, not a weapon, the law sees otherwise.

I also think it is stupid that tasers are illegal, properly trained, a person would not even have to use it on the person, a quick press of the button to show what it is would be enough to scare most attackers off.

lol.

Just found this on the internet, turns out you can carry a folding knife that is less than 3 inchs long, it can NOT lock when the blade is out.

That's not the funny part, this is:

Knives that are illegal
There is a complete ban on the sale of some knives:

flick knives (also called ‘switchblades’ or ‘automatic knives’) - where the blade is hidden inside the handle and shoots out when a button is pressed
butterfly knives - where the blade is hidden inside a handle that splits in two around it, like wings; the handles swing around the blade to open or close it
disguised knives – eg where the blade is hidden inside a belt buckle or fake mobile phone
gravity knives
sword-sticks
samurai swords (with some exceptions, including antiques and swords made to traditional methods before 1954)
hand or foot-claws
push daggers
hollow kubotan (cylinder-shaped keychain) holding spikes
shuriken (also known as ‘death stars’ or ‘throwing stars’)
kusari-gama (sickle attached to a rope, cord or wire)
kyoketsu-shoge (hook-knife attached to a rope, cord or wire)
kusari (weight attached to a rope, cord or wire)

All that stuff sounds complete badass.

I sucked in school.

Easy mistake with the American spelling it as defense.

I agree with OP in a sense.

I like that we're not allowed to carry weapons around with us... but I don't like how easily you can find yourself in jail for punching an attacker. Be it in self defence or mild retaliation in the heat of the moment.

It's still a weapon and arguably a more effective weapon because the child knows exactly how to use the tool as a weapon.

Are you just looking for legal ways to **** people up? Your posts are coming across very 'Falling Down'.
