I have an iPhone 4S in White (16GB) locked to Vodafone.

Envirophone offer 300 for it. Now having a quick browse on ebay indicates that I could get around another 50 for it however there will the ebay fee's to pay and also the possibility of being messed around by scammers etc.

I'm thinking selling to Envirophone by the end of July and using my old 3GS in anticipation of the 5 and then putting another 200 to 'upgrade'.

Is anyone doing similar? Also does anyone know other places which may offer a more competitive price for the 4S?

However this is on the basis of the 5 coming out by Oct / Nov. I don't want to be stuck with the 3GS until next year!

To be honest mate I was thinking about doing something like this with my 16Gb Black 4s
but I thought that I would wait untill the official release and specs of the 5 as I doubt
that there is going to be an amazing difference apart from the screen and things such as
that anyway.

The 4s will get the iOS update that will come out with the 5 anyway.

I would say wait and see what the official specs of the new phone are going to be 1st
and see if its worth you doing it.

Thinking about this as well, but a £200 loss in like 1 year, ouch. 20th October is when I bought mine.

What wrong with your 4s ?

Do you really want another phone because "it's new" ?

Keep the 4s as someone else has said as I dont think there is going to be that much of a difference.

I'll be keeping my iPhone 4 for another 18 months yet.

Nothing wrong at all with the 4S - very happy with it. The reason for wanting to change is I'm under the impression that the 5 is going to be a 'big' change from the 4S. As they can't just refresh the 4 again so I'm thinking it'll be a completely new design with new features.

Although I probably am going to wait it out. I think I'd be annoyed if I sold up early and then had to wait around until December only to discover that the new changes aren't all that great after all.

Could probably get 250 even once the new one is out I reckon.

The 5 is going to be a design change, no doubt about that. Bigger display, more power, the usual.

However, this doesn't mean that it'll be a more capable phone; I certainly doubt it will offer a huge amount more at introduction. If it's anything like the current situation, the 4S will start falling behind at iOS 7 - basically, if you hold on to your 4S and wait until next year, you more than likely won't be missing out on much.

I'm currently trying to make the same decision; I'm probably going to be getting a new, boxed 4S as a replacement for the current refurb that I have (this will be my 5th one), and cannot decide whether to sell (meaning that I'd have to make a contribution to a 5 of around £250 going by current auction prices, so unlikely) or if possible get a gift voucher as a refund for the new 4S (gotta be hopeful for that one) to buy a 5 when it comes out (no loss).

I've sold my iPhone 4S 32GB White for a Samsung Galaxy S III for now until the iPhone 5 is released. Got £310 for it, and got the S3 for £350. If it offers something new, then I may consider going back to the iPhone. The iPhone was great and did what I needed it to do very well.

But I was so bored with iOS! The geek in me fancied a change and widgets to play and customise with.

As far as I can tell from rumours iPhone 5 can do more damage to Apples market share than good. More processing power is just not needed, so that's no longer reason for upgrade. Most of us would happily trade any CPU upgrade over 4S for an extra day of battery power. Any screen size upgrade within current form factor is not going to be significant. However, if Apple doesn't finally take European Siri (the main "feature" of 4S) out of beta before launch of 5 and if they really change the power socket thus rebooting accessories market, I think iphone market share will rapidly fall.

iPhone sales are as good as they are for numerous reasons:
  • Some will buy an iPhone merely because of the fruit logo on the back, regardless of how good the product is.
  • Apple is known for their fit and finish with their products, something which, no matter how much you argue, is simply not found with virtually all competing devices out there. Those using "quality" materials still don't quite match Apple's construction.
  • Some people like the simple and "just works" approach the iPhone has, especially now with iCloud (taking out the PITA that iTunes is altogether).

The typical, non-techie user will not care about what's inside. They want the interface to just work smoothly. Most will also disagree with your battery life argument; very few need two days worth of battery life (unless you live on the streets, in which case you really have got your financial priorities in the wrong order). You take it out, use it for the day, come home and charge it with around 30% left. And who is going to complain that the new phone is more powerful than the last? Look at Samsung, who completely use the numbers to sell their phones. If it works for them, good on them. Staying on old technology does not make sales.

Display size...4 inches is as far as Apple needs to go. Displays above around 4.3" don't work as well in practice as people like to believe, and the reality is that people simply do not want such large phones.

Where did you get a S3 for £350?

Well the new Samsung phones are selling so, people must want the large phones. I want the iPhone to be around 4" or something.

I'm not really fussed about a redesign.. It's a lovely design, yes its been around for 2 years now, but its great.

Seriously no matter how much faster the 5 is I really dont see anyone needing it, things that would be more interesting to me would be if they include NFC and how they intend to use it.

I'll upgrade but won't sell my 4S until the 5 is literally on my doorstep and I've swapped the sim, don't mind making a little less extra cash than I could selling it off earlier, the things hold their value fairly well if sold via forums and kept in good nick and I can afford to swap, so I will. I doubt the 5 will be out for a few months anyway so I'd hold selling unless you're happy to use an in-betweener phone for as long as it takes.

Look at the large scale market, and people will probably think that 4.8" is too big. I have to say, I have a feeling that I may prefer the current design to the one of the new phone (gut feeling). I just can't really fault the current model!

Pretty much agree. I think a 4" iphone with a similar design to the 4/4s would be good. If they lost some of the bezel, the size of the phone wouldn't have to be much bigger at all.

I was thinking of something similar. I'm worried regarding how some existing apps would work on the bigger screen, will they be stretched or will there be a black bar or something at the bottom. It will take a lot of time for apps to be updated to properly fit the larger/longer screen of the new iphone 5. Having the retina ipad there are still so many apps that have not been updated to utilise the new display.

I'll wait and see when the 5 comes out. I really want to get back onto the primary version rather than all the S models I have had. If I had an iphone 4 originally I wouldn't have bothered with the 4s because they look and both do the same thing.

Ah, but Larrs, that's the thing. The 4 and the 4S don't have many differences now, but that's going to change a lot when iOS 6 comes out (partially due to Apple "conning" their customers a little bit).

The iPad is a bit different though, because that's an increase of the resolution of elements. With a display of the same pixel density, but with more space, it'll probably be less of a problem.
