I have a little bit of money from my birthday and I've been thinking about the new gen Nanos.

Now, I despise all the fuss around iPods simply because of the false symbol it has become. All Apple does well is GUIs.

Currently, my player of choice is a Sony NWZ-A816 bought from here on the MM last year. The sound quality is great but lacks on storage.

Has the SQ of the iPod Nano moved on? It used to be dreadful from what I have heard of it.

I also use my N96 for music but it tends to drain the battery quite quickly.

So, I want:

Easy to use
4gb+
Drag and Drop
Good SQ
Good battery life

Ideas?

It doesn't have drag n drop thats all I know for sure, I'd like one to use nike+ with but I can't justify the amount so I'll stick with my ipod shuffle.

I've got a 12gb sandisk sansa fuze, cost me 60 quid brand new, half the price of a nano. Yet I still miss my ipod, GUI makes such a huge difference!

Drag and Drop - non iPod
Good Sound Quality - Sony sounds a fair whack better than My iPod Minis.

16Gb NWZ ~ £90

Oh and I despised iTunes :p

I love iTunes but then again I have a Mac.

Not sure I would be able to say that if I was relying on it in Windows, but I didn't have much of a problem with it then either.

Haha! Guess you haven't heard of the Mac Pro, iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, iPhone and pretty much all Apple Hardware being immensely amazing!

If you don't like the iPod don't get one. It still is the definitive MP3 player to have and it's the definitive one for a reason. Because they are great pieces of hardware!

I have a Nano. It is tiny and easy to use, but the sound quality is only so-so, even with decent earphones. It has no equaliser, so there is no tweaking of levels.
Mine is perfect for off road cycling, as it is tiny and easy to operate by feel. SQ isn't really an issue under those circumstances, but if I was listening to it in the house, I'd be using my Sansa instead.

Just get one. Apple arnt good just because of their GUI's. Ther products are easy to use and just work. You might not like itunes but you shouldn't not get an ipod because of it. Ipods also look cool :P

Except all of those products rely on their software to make them any different from the competition. A MacPro, iMac, MabBook, MacBook Pro and Mini are all just standard overpriced Windows PCs without OSX, and the iPhone is nothing without iPhone OS either. Apple is all about their software, it's precisely what defines them from everything else out there!

I have an iPhone and no amount of EQ tweaking makes it sound as good as a Nokia N85 or 5800. Personally I think iPods and iPhones are somwhat lacking on sound quality these days.

That's utter tripe. It's the combination of hardware and software that makes Apple products so successful. OS X is engineered to run on Apple hardware. A hackintosh might be cheaper but it's a hell of a lot less optimised or reliable.

Not going to disagree with that. The earlier iPods were more aspirational than the current mass market devices. I'm keeping my 3rd Gen until it dies.
