Should I give him the serial number or is this a scam?

He said it was to make sure he could run the card in SLI?

Should I be worried? or should I give him the number?

Thanks

Is this the KFA2 680 4gb you're selling? Tell him as long as the card is a 680 4GB then he can SLI it properly, if it's 2GB only 2GB of your card will be used instead of 4gb.

This was he's said after I gave him that question.

"I'm aware of that, but I've been after this specific card for a while. Just want to be clear of the serial number. I've got a 4gb version too"

I don't know If I should give him my serial number? Is it ok to do so?

I wouldn't give it to him. With the serial number theres nothing stopping him registering the card to himself.

Is there a part number on the box you can give him to check against his part number?

Well if he know it will work properly why does he need a serial number? It seems odd.. But I don't see what he can gain from it..

Im a bit wary though

Why not give it to him? Or am I missing something?

Because maybe he has one and removed the cooler/sticker for whatever reason and going to use the serial number for rma purpose because he doesn't have one and needs one?

Maybe not and it's innocent enough, but it could cause a lot of grief for the next owner of the card if it does develop a fault somewhere down the line.

Maybe they want to check remaining warranty?

A screengrab of an invoice with names/details edited out should suffice.

Nothing would surprise me these days if it was some kind of scam tbh, not saying it is, but it's a very strange request.

On saying that, maybe they are checking somehow that you are not going to scam them too?

As mentioned above, the purchaser doesn't need a serial no. to check for SLi compatibility, any 2Gb+2Gb/4Gb/4Gb same series number is all the details you need.

Exactly.

Like meatloaf said: With the serial number there's nothing stopping him registering the card to himself. I haven't registered the card yet.

Edit

I haven't heard from him after I told him I wouldn't give him the SN. I think he was trying to scam me. I'll wait to see what he reply's back. If he reply's?

Well I got a reply...this is what he said.

It seems odd I want to confirm the details of the thing you're selling? What's odd, is your reluctance help a potential buyer make an informed decision. I want to confirm the exact type of card. There are several different types and I want a specific one, not just any card that will work with my current 680. The serial may be displayed as a P/N on your box.

I can see why he would want the SN. It would give him the exact model of the card, but he doesnt need the SN to do that. You know the exact model and BIOS of the card already as the seller after all...

what should I do then?

I might just say sorry mate. and not give it to him. I have 6 people on watch....I'm sure I'll have no problem selling this gpu. It's brand new.. too many scammers everywhere. I have the original receipt and full warranty.

I have to say that it seems a little iffy. I wouldn't want to give it to him and his persistence would only make me worse.

Anyone who knows computers would do some research about what they need or would know and the S/N isn't going to help any more than research.

lol all 680s work together irrespective of the bios/serial number so tell him he's wrong.

As long as it's a 680 and matches the VRAM amount it'll be fine.

How is he planning to ascertain the exact model from the serial anyway? It's not like the manufacturers database of serial numbers is public domain.

It's dodgy, find another buyer. If he wants it he can buy it on the Part Number/BIOS/Model info.
