Selling your kidney...

Since we are talking about kidneys im gonna ask this.

How big are kidney stones and has anyone ever had them? :p

Yeah but how could I guarantee that my other kidney won't fail.

If you look after it, then unlikely. Your kidneys are pretty robust. You've got more chance of dying of something else than your kidney packing up completely so quickly.

No it wouldn't. I know it's a tad selfish, but kidney transplants don't save lives, they just improve quality of life - so nobody lives or dies by my decision

If somebody is dying of kidney failure, due to a sever infection or rupture or whatever, and it's their only kidney (many are born with only one) then a kidney transplant would save their life.

Also, even if it was give somebody an extra few years or improve their life, you wouldn't do that for them? When the losses are so minimal to you and the gains so great for them?

i thought both of them had something to do with what you drink? :o

In essence your kidneys filter and clean your blood. They remove toxins. It's a round-the-clock job but even one kidney is up to the task.

The average kidney stones are 4-6mm in size. Smaller ones are often passed without the person realising.

I know two people who've had them, both were caused by dehydration.

...and yes the large stones are extremely painful to pass. Even when broken up by the treatment.

The likelihood of that situation is far less than the liklihood of me going into kidney failure myself though.

It wouldn't massively improve it though, and wouldn't prolong their life

If your wee is the yellow colour then you are not drinking enough water and you could end up getting the stones!

If your wee is clear then you are drinking enough :)

It would be happening more often than you think. However I'm not sure, but I think organ donors donate plenty of kidneys these days.

Yes it would, and yes it does. My girlfriend's Uncle had one kidney removed due to a severe infection, it shrivelled up completely and was polluting his blood. When his other kidney done the same, his grandson donated his right kidney and he is still alive today. He would have died without the transplant.

Yeap, and some of them have razor-sharp edges, similar to gravel :D

I feel sorry for anyone that has to pass that through there willy :(

Would they cause blood?

It happens exactly as often as I think actually

He probably (and I'm going off averages because I don't know him obviously) could have been on dialysis for a long while, rather than dying though

Would you like to be put on Dialysis every day or what ever it is?

Well a transplant was the better choice, obviously. As the Uncle and Grandson are both ok, and the Uncle isn't constantly hooked up to a machine to keep him alive.

No, and it's not daily, but my point was that it doesn't save lives. If a family member needed it, they could have it, but I am not short-sighted enough to sell one for money

What if the Mafia were after you and whre going to make you sleep with the fishies unless you payed up?

So tell me, if a piece of liver grows back in 12 months why cant this fact be used to repair damaged livers? Does liver damage occur spontaniously or over time? If overtime then in theory couldnt you just continually replace it (bit like resurfacing a road I guess! Once you've finished one end, its time to start resurfacing at the other!)?

Well in that case j00ni has bigger problems than the risk of his remaining kidney failing I suppose but it is a shade unlikely. I don't know j00ni but he doesn't really strike me as the type to be in hock to mafiosi. :)

I think like most people I'd probably give up a kidney for a family member but I don't think I'd be all that keen on selling off bodyparts, not to mention the illegality of it.
