Sending emails through a different router

Hi all...I know the title is brief, but bare with me :)

Basically, I am with my ISP at home, and can send and receive emails perfectly fine as you would presume.

Now, most days as I'm unemployed atm I spend at my girlfriends house, I can receive my emails fine there, but when it comes to sending emails, it doesn't want to work.

I believe the emails go via SMTP...But is it becaus I'm trying to send an email through my girlfriends router? Or is there another reason? Or do I need to set up something my end in order to enable me to send emails from wherever I am.

Its due to being on a different ISP. You need to change the SMTP server to your GFs ISP and most likely, add in their account details to authorise on it.

There are other ways around it though, such as by using Google to control the mail server etc.

Thanks though, I' guessing i'll need to add in the ISP, then add the account name and password?

Might have a look into it, intrigued about that google thing you speak of though?

Never knew that, surely his GF's isp wouldnt relay email for an email domain they dont own? But i would have thought the smtp server he is using is accessible all over the web? (would he need to authenticate as he isnt directly connected to his isp's network?)

I 'think', I can set up a different pop3 server from my house location, then add a different password, and add that to outlook...

Not sure though, on their website it says about telnetting into a domain to do it, but obviously i can only do it from my house, as that's where the ISP is.


Main reason is because I don't like using the webmail client :p
 
From what i read you can still use your ISP's SMTP server whilst connected to a different ISP aslong as you authenticate to the outgoing email (SMTP) server. As when you are connected through them you dont need to authenicate. I didnt know that so you learn something new every day! Must cut down on the risk of their servers being used as a spam relay, probably a firewall rule or something.

This is another way of doing it. You can leave the auth details on whilst connected back at yours to save turning it and and off.

All details you need should be on both ISP websites - they should have email/Outlook guides.

So I would literally use the SMTP address for the ISP I am sending from? Then thats that?

I'll have a play :) thanks

Yeah or as mentioned, you maybe able to still use your ISP one but need to auth with user/pass. Best to look up on the email guides on your/your GF's ISP pages :)

Had a little look, although when I did i stumbled upon the words "If you are using a different ISP to send email then you cannot send it through BT" Or something along those lines :p...Which is silly.

Must be a way, going to try something my end...Hate being a newby to networking in this manor :(
 
Can you not use Webmail the times when you are not at home?

Most ISP's have webmail access of some description.

Just read you dont like webmail clients.

Gmail POP forwarding for the win although is still webmail :(

Yeah I can use the web mail, just it is naff...And it seems to add random characters into the emails. :)
 
You can probably access your ISPs SMTP server via the submission port 587.
In outlook, change the advanced server settings from SMTP port 25 to port 587 and try again. BT probably wont be blocking that.
You will still need to authenticate though.

Authenticate with whom though? My ISP or theres? :) As that is the problem atm, as the person who knows the ISP details is on holiday, and I don't want to go snooping around in his room :p

Still no joy my end sadly.......All I get is:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '***************'. Subject 'testttttttt', Account: 'pop3.******', Server: 'post.demon.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 Authentication required when sending mail on port 587', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Which is an authentication error.

Nice, having a look through, I don't know where that TLS option is though? Using Outlook express...

Initial try was a failure...but I'll keep at it :)

EDIT:

It's trying to send the mail....just it keeps timing out now...that's using port 465 though, port 587 didn't work I don't think.

Yeah, however I'm using my correct auth details....If I had the auth details of the ISP I was connected to I'd have no problem I don't think...?

However when I use port 465 (As that link given to me suggests) then it just times out....as if it is actually trying to send.

Well, I'm trying to send it through the demon server, as thats what the following link says I can do: http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/technicallibrary/misc/smtp/

And it asks to put in my ISP's auth details (Demon)....I believe I am connected to a BT line atm (As I'm not at home much atm)...I would try BT's SMTP address however I do not have the auth details for this account at the time being :)
