Server 2003 RAID5 Performance

This is what I get on my Areca with 2 15,000rpm drives:

But still go for the Adaptec!

Does it have to be 2k3? Software RAID under Linux and Solaris are rather good.

2k3 is simply for convenience and simplicity. I already have 2k3 set up at home and I'm very familiar with it. I know linux would probably be a better option for me on most counts, but the fact is every time I've had a hack at getting more familiar with linux I've been knocked back with frustration. I've used Debian on my PVR box off and on and Ubuntu on my laptop, but I don't mind breaking these and rebuilding them when I can't fix them, but my server box is on 24.7 and I rely on it for most things and for backups so experimenting around on it with something I'm not very familiar with seems like more trouble than it's worth..

300Mb(it) is around 37.5MB/s so you loose a fair bit on read speeds too but should cope (just about) with high bitrate HD content streaming. With 60Mb(it) being around 7.5MB/s, writes are painfully slow compared to a decent RAID controller where write speeds can be amazing.

My appolgies, I typed it incorrectly, I got around 300 MB/sec for reads on a standard HD tune test, with 60 MB/sec writes, but that was with twelve 750GB Samsung drives on a adaptec 21610sa card, under software raid with each drive added as a JBOD array.

I had hoped to use the raid 5 on the card, but it only supports less that 2 tb arrays, which was no use to me.

I am now using raid 0 on Server 2008, which also works well.
