I am looking to set up a server at work and would be grateful for some guidance.

I currently have 3 pcs running windows 7 64 bit.

One pc currently stores all files and the other two pcs can access these and change them.

I want to move these shared files onto a server and then allow any number of people to share these. The data is currently less than 256mb.

At the moment I back up online so I would like to get the server to auto back up.

I have a 4 port switch which if full so I guess I would need another one.

Can some spec something with all the correct software.

Also is it possible to alter a word document and then not be able to overwrite the original

Sounds like overkill to me for a few PC's and 256MB of data.

I agree, Dropbox is a very good idea or similar. Google drive, Skydrive etc.

They'll allow all the computers to access the content via a normal explorer window and save work related content to that local directory, this then syncs with the online server. Very easy to setup, files can be accessed anywhere and it's free!

Cloud storage would be a pain for large files, but for what I'm guessing is office docs. It's perfect. Of the files are large and speed is a concern. A NAS would be better, size of a router, user friendly and cheaper than a full blown server.

thanks for this.

anyone know if it possible to alter a word document and then not be able to overwrite the original.

this is because sometimes people working on docs turn don't save as and then choose a different filename which causes the original to be overwritten
