Servicing during a lease

Have you had any luck getting a dealer to do this without the pollen filters? They always seem to insist its critical and it adds another hundred quid!

I've had the Audi dealer try it on with pollen filters in the past. Each time I've queried whether they're actually required and each time they've admitted that they're not, merely recommended.

I'm sure in your lease it will state you have to get your car serviced at a main dealer. Mine does. The only thing I don't want to do is get it serviced twice, so I'll need to ring up the lease company to find out how long past the service date I can wait for the service so that when the second service is due the car has already been given back.

+1

When I had my focus and it needed new discs and pads and I took it to the ford dealer and supplied them with the parts. They had no trouble at all fitting them for me. I always find the dealers are open to negotiation.

I gave in because they could do it this weekend so I won't need to take any time off work. The price for labour was supposedly £130 without any parts!

At least I have peace of mind that I won't get penalised when it gets collected. Just got a scuffed alloy and chunk out of the sidewall to worry about now.

Never paid them for pollen filters on the F11. It had its second oil service last week, which to my surprise and unlike the E60 has the air filter and fuel filters too. These are on the 3rd service on the E60/61 and its an expensive service. Total cost with the chassis check (£88)as well but no pollen filters was £460, which although i wasn't expecting it to be that much isn't to bad.

If you hand the car back and a service is due, either on fixed date/mileage or variable and the car is indicating one is due, they'll most likely bill you for it.

I'm aware of this. Manufacturers usually have a certain amount of leeway in terms of time and mileage on when you have to get the service done. So if it's a 2 - 4 weeks you can wait until the the last day to get it serviced at say 56 weeks old therefore when you give the car back it doesn't require the 2nd service for another 4 weeks.

come out of it.

Your paying a monthly fee for a car at no doubt is about how much the annual service costs!

Suck it up and pay for the service. Once its done, then its done for the year. Next one no doubt will be more expensive.

You are missing the point. I know the car needs a service, I knew what was required when I took the car. £160 for an oil and filter change is incredibly poor value!

Not from a main dealer it isn't - it's about right.

I paid Honda £200 for , oil+filter, pollen filter, air filter and the usual checks in June

It isn't just an oil and filter change - I suspect more is involved. Perhaps not a huge amount more but it isn't purely an oil change.

But its not though is it.

Its an oil and filter change, then a check over the car for suspension components, checking all fluid levels, tyre pressures etc. Then the labour rates they have must be around £80 an hour + parts and consumables.

So its not just an oil and filter change, and nope, im not missing the point at all.

It also includes breakdown cover, I don't need this. I just need a stamp to say the car has had its oil, filter and pollen filter changed. It's done 4K miles and the tracking was done and the suspension checked over about 3 months ago when I hit a pot hole. It's poor value and in my opinion not worth £160, although it seems I have very little choice if I don't want to risk being fine.

I think the oil and filter change is the only tangible benefit of the service, as above a lot is just visual checks and a pointless breakdown cover (which I already have separately).

Are you going to skimp on that as well?

That was a good post. No I won't be else I'll no doubt get penalised for it. The tyre was previously replaced after only 1k miles due to me hitting a pothole, then my Mrs took a chunk out of the tyre and curbed the alloy.

It might seem I am being a cheapskate but I think even the biggest ford fan will struggle to argue the interim service is good value at £160. I'm happy to pay for a good service/experience/quality product but this seems like I'm trapped and forced to use the dealer at ridiculous rates.

The visual checks are important though - most people are unwilling or unable to do them and wouldn't spot issues otherwise.

To be fair you are driving somebody elses brand new car - it is fairy reasonable to expect you to main dealer service it to protect its residuals.

If you want to be able to take your car to the guy down the road at half the price then buy it and you can do whatever you like with it.

I don't think anyone is telling you it fantastic value.

But what you are being consistently told is it is about right for a main dealer.

You can undoubtedly use someone else but you won't be saving all that much money to get an equivalent service and will just be in for a potential argument down the line.

Time to suck it up

Fair point it being someone else's car, easy to forget that.

I have sucked it up, it's booked in this weekend. No harm checking my options but there doesn't seem to be any other than using the main dealer.
