SETI@Home & OcUk Projects News Vol. 169 25th Febuary - 3rd March 2012

Ahh they are at it again then all the morals of a pack of scrub hounds. If you think i am being overly critical just ask Mr Edgedemon about how we contributed money - just short of $70 towards Jason G's gtx 480 so he could crack on with seti related testing without a word of thanks and then followed by consistent emails like the one above stating that if we joined them we would get exclusive access to pre release apps etc ......

go to hell gpu users group the stench is drifting across the pond .... and it aint to fresh :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

News in t'morning :)

Toxic - I'm disappointed. :(

The pre-release stuff is **** and bull. GPUUG gets diddly in that regard. If you want the pre-release stuff just register as a lunatics beta tester - and then 'sign' the Nvidia NDA to gian access to the next gen' CUDA libraries. But be prepared for some nasty messes on your HDD/SSD, see your RAC tank and error count go up. There is no 'enhanced' binary access. I have the same access to binaries as any other cruncher - and I'm the President of GPUUG Inc. GPUUG Inc was formed for a good financial reason; the benefits have not yet been fully realised although this will change very soon.

And yes, I also gave to Jason's fund drive - whilst in OCUK, and using GTX285s - well before Jason joined GPUUG and before I even had a sniff of a Fermi card.

The thing that maks me stay with GPUUG is that they got off their backsides and made something happen to keep the project out of the brown smelly stuff (which BTW, it was VERY close to falling in to), by providing a way for donations to be made that are 100% given to the project (bypassing Berkeley's cut), enabling PayPal donations (which were impossible brefore) and giving access to people who are in a position to donate their own company's time to build servers and or dnoate hardware for free (you don't get a green star for donating a $2,000 Xeon). All of the last four servers (which includes the 3 new ones) were built by team members, which has saved a shed load of money the project would normally have to have paid had they procured the servers themselves. A significnt proportion of the component costs was borne by non GPUUG crunchers.

Bash the GPUUG all you like - but acknowledge that they have helped keep S@H alive and will continue to do so as much as they can - with EVERYONE's help. GPUUG is simply a mechanism that makes financial sense. Sharp tactics for recruitment? Yes, but ultimately their objectives are sound.

.....mutter mutter - off to bed.

I don't like the fact that the GPU users group think they are above all others because of the funding makes wanna puke to be honest would rather have the project go under than have one group of people think they deserve more recognition than anyone else big or small. ****s the lot of them.

**** the GPU users group.

I am using the wording from the email i received trying to recruit me "pre-release exclusive access" which was "not available by any other means".

I get off my backside every week and do the news .... i give regularly maybe only 20-30 dollars here and there but i contribute as my means dictate. Saddly i dont have a bottomless bank balance or i would donate some hardware or help to build something which would be a bit impractical given the distances etc.
Yes sharp tactics for recruitment indeed and if we were to use the messageing system to try and recruit team members i fancy we would probably get a ticking off.
I don't need to bash i am just highlighting the tactics and while there cause has helped the project stay alive all the recruitment tactics do is create a little animosity.

How did they get access to your email? I thought that was something limited to your team founder.

Wow I didn't realise what a cut throat world Folding is, what a week to rejoin :D

Morning Colin :)

Welcome to the team sah! Its not as cut throat as it might seem at first glance, while the Gpu Users group are doing some great things and contributing to the success of the Seti project we just disagree a little over how they are garnering team members.

I wish i had more disposable income that i could give but i don't all i can do is crunch and even then my output of late has been pretty pants but it will improve.

Am still proud as punch to be part of "The Worlds Finest Team" the laughs, the knowledge and the ups and downs of my first 2 years (2 years today) have been unforgettable and i will not be swayed by outside recruitment drives no matter how well intended :D

Happy birthday s'ah. Are you going to treat yourself on this special day to egg n chips and quad GTX590s? :D

:D On a strict diet so egg n chips are out i'm afraid, but i got myself a bag of caffeine beans and the machines all fired up. Quad gtx 590's that'd be nice but part of the problem of late has been that i am officially unemployed now and have been trying to sell bits n bobs to trim down, while the output will definately rise i doubt i could do the days of old £4 a day on electric .... but i will give it my best shot :)

Don't tempt him. :p

Am hoping Kepler comes up with the goods as far as efficiency is concerned am looking to lower the cost of a lot of things but the enthusiasm is still there:D

Anybody got numbers for a 7970 7950 on milkyway?

Edit : Looks like we will get to UK No.1 in milkyway this month go team:D

I just got a 7970 yesterday so haven't done much tweaking on it. I was getting 37-39s per WU with it running 1125/1250 at stock 1.1125v. Which means I am getting almost exactly the same out of it as my 5970, although I'm sure the power consumption will be less (will measure this later). I have tried running 2 WUs at once but it doesn't seem to make much difference. It does 2 WUs in 73-74s.

UK Boinc Team seem to have increased their output over the last few days so I don't know if/when we will catch them. BOINC stats seems to have said about a month to overtake them for about 6 months

cheers Area51

No-one disputes the good that the GPUusers group has done, and will do, but there are ways to do things and Im with toxic on this one - it just wasn't right..

Thx for sorting though

NO further speculative recruiting eMails or PMs will be forthcoming from GPUUG to OCUK. ;)

Are we allowed to send them requests.

But the dodgy practice continues for the other teams out there? Guess OCUK might get more membership if this is a safehaven

:D

Oh dear :p:D

:D

Good point sah this might actually work to our advantage :)

Thanks for sorting it Mr Area51 appreciate that it puts me in mind of a quote that i constantly refer to whenever i feel out of my depth (plus it covers the single digit iq excuse)

“The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” - Albert Einstein

Look ma im a genius :D:D

Away from all of the speculative recruiting emails:

I've been intending to upgrade my GPU (Almost just for crunching), so come April with the mid-range Kepler, I'll be using it for things related to it's namesake (SETI, Einstein, Milkyway)

Also, if you want me to up production, I wouldn't mind going full on SETI. I have a total of about 550 RAC between all 3 projects, 70 of which SETI.
