SETI@Home & OcUk Projects News Vol. 174 7th April - 27th April 2012

Glad to see you got sorted Stickman nice one :)

Thanks TTB. It's looking like I should be able to hit about 10,000 ppd.

One question: does anyone know how I can see my rac from my earliest days on seti (few years ago running just a power efficient dual core 2.5GHz AMD 4850e)... just want to see how much improvement the new tech has made. :)

Thatnks for the news - glad it's back. I always read even if I don't post, and all these ideas about GPUs has me thinking - how many should I run on my 560ti here. 1GB RAM and 384 cores

All connected up - running pressure/leak test.......

One fitting leaking on bottom GPU........

:(

Luckily - I have spares

:) Am looking forward to this .... free screensavers all round ;)

Am not sure there are others more knowledgeable than i on the subject (which is just a diplomatic way of saying they have been around from year dot!):D

Your welcome Mr FluffySheep sah, i would certainly be looking at running 2 tasks per gpu with that card, do you have it overclocked at all? :)

I think the boincstats RAC graphs only go back 60 days.

this site has your milestone dates since August 2010, which you could use to extrapolate your work done.

Our friends at SetiNL let you add more days to your history graphs 30 days at a time and by judicious sizing of the "graphics crunchhistory stickman graph" :D you can get what you are after.....then take a turn on old spanky for all that slacking...:p

Well, I think I've finished - but still not sure about the bottom GPU connectioins (might have a slight leak)........will keep an eye on it.

Now all I have to do is get it upstairs........

As I can barely lift the damn thing it is gonna be a struggle....... :(

Just ben checking the World Single PC RAC and found.....

Host ID "3050453" has an RAC of 110k.......using 3 x GTX 680's.

derv...... This PARP!!!! goes out to you - not for your cell but for your No 1 Spot in RAC. I suspect you have mere days before I take up the No 1 Position :D

LOL Thanks man, that's perfect. :)

And yeah, didn't produce many units until recently... as I say I only just bought and built a machine capable of even getting me in the top 20s here, and before with the little power-efficient dual core it was quite disheartening when I was running 24/7 and still not even making a dent so I am sorry to say I gave up. But now I have a decent card I should be able to churn out a few Work Units, at least for a while - Job might be going soon in which case I'd have to cut costs) - but until then it's all good. :)

Fighting talk there sir. Got my fingers crossed for a long power cut in your street for the next few weeks

:D

Knew I shouldn't have spent my hard earned on a new monitor last week. Could have bought a few more 580s for that!

Not overclocked at all - time to investigate. I just tried 2 instances and it slowed the crunch time. A GPU monitor is telling me that 1 instance uses about 70% of GPU time, so I think it needs an overclock to hit it's stride - to the internetz and read up me thinks!

2 instances will slow the crunch time for individual units but overall you'll be outputting more. You should be hitting a good 95-99% GPU usage running two WUs.

You should be able to clock the core on your GPU by 50mhz without touching the voltage. Try that for starters and work your way up from there.

Quick Question.....

When running multiple instances on multiple GPU's in the same rig with the optimised Lunatics App - is it better to dedicate a CPU Core(S) to assist the GPU's?

Or are we now able to utilse all the CPU for wu's without dedicating any to the GPU's?

It's been a while since I participated and I have not kept up with the latest news.

I'm in no way saying this is the definitive answer but i find that the gpu usage is all over the shop (trace looks like a seismograph during an earth quake :p ) when using all the cores for cpu task whereas i get a constant 94%+ usage when dedicating a core to the gpus.

Both my rigs are the opposite. I don't dedicate any CPU cores to the GPUs and my GPU usage is fairly solid around 94-98% the whole time. That said I'm only running two GPUs in each rig and you chaps seem to be running many more than that

If I begin using the machine however (e.g browsing the OCUK forums :D ) it will dip and "seismograph" quite regularly.

Only reason I ask is:

Rig 1: 990X & 4 x 680's running 3 wu's per GPU requires 3 CPU cores dedicated to GPU's

Rig 2: 2600K & 2 x 560ti's running 3 wu's per GPU doesn't require CPU to supply GPU's

Rig 3: 2600K & 2 x 460's (V2) and a 430 running 2 wu's per GPU doesn't require CPU to supply GPU's

So it looks like the 2600K's are more efficient at supply work to the GPU's.

The 430, 460's & 560ti's are maxed out at 99% usage and the 680's max out at 96 to 98% usage.

Ordered some replacements for the 560ti's (as one is defective - thus both are being retunred) - hopefully, the replacements will be here tomorrow (2 x 570's & 1 x 460) :D
