Hi there,

Recently got a new TV, a 40" 1080p.

Now Ive got the PS3 connected to the TV via HDMI. The PS3 automatically detected 1080p as the output.

When I fired up F1 and PES though, around the cars and players there are jaggy lines. I dont know whether its something to do with the actual games or the PS3 settings...

Can someone shed some light on this matter, I want smooth lines :p

Cheers

Not all games support 1080p so it'll default to 525i or 720p. Even with some games supporting 1080p they will still run in a lower res. To force 1080p on the games that support it jus untick all the other res's apart from 1080p

You won't get them that often with this generation.

Bah, did'nt want to hear that :p

Why dont they just make games 1080p then.

Dont they realise that people have large screens and want decent pictures :D

I'l try and force 1080p. See if I see a difference.

Thanks

1080p is more than twice the pixel count that 720p provides, which equates to more than twice the load on the GPU. It's very rare for PS3 games to be native 1080p and i think all 360 games are 720p (or less in some cases).

One problem is though, that that 360 has a scaler chip to upscale 720p to 1080p, but the PS3 lacks this. However i would be willing to bet that any half decent TV will have a more than adequate scaler chip built in.

Tick all the boxes that show up on your display settings options, not just 1080p. The PS3 isn't made of magic and can't do 1080p on everything. If you only ticked 1080p and tried to play a game that's only 720p, the console will do 576i, not 1080p.

Don't know if your TV is capable of it but mine (42" Panasonic) tells me when the mode switches... so I can see that the PS3 menu runs at 1080p but some games run at 720p (including GTA4).

Its very rare that games run at true 1080p. Gran Turismo prologue does and i think ridge racer does too.

I would advise this but DON'T tick 1080i

May I ask why? As I have tested with somebody's 1080p TV. Even with 1080i checked, or rather HDMI set to automatic (all is checked), GT5P detects 1080p, if I play something else that is 1080i it'll show 1080i in the info for the TV. If a 720 game is played, well it'll run 720.

I learned this awful disaster January/February hoping I could force games to 1080 on the 24" Dell, as it reverted to SD just like the thread starter. :/

Since so many games will only run 720p. As thats how the game developer made it normally.

Because 9 out of 10 games that run in both 720p and 1080i look better in 720p.

If you have a 1080p TV, it's best to have 720p and 1080p checked and let the PS3 handle it. Sometimes you can force a game to 1080p and it will look slightly better, though often not by much and is not worth the effort of changing the settings before you play the game.

Who said anything about that. Apparently you're not following me. With all checked that I just said. If the game is 720p it'll detect and run 720p. If a game/video content was designed merely for 1080i, it'll run that. If it doesn't you'll have to do what was previously mentioned. To uncheck A and C but leave B checked to get the 1080i setting to take effect, and vice versa. Though we all know, or should know this hardly ever happens, content made for 1080i.

Like Warhawk for example. I tested this when I first was checking the HD console stuff out on the Dell display. It's listed 720p as well as 1080i on the back of the Warhawk box, but even with all 3 entries checked in the PS3 display settings the game will still run at 720p from the PS3 because thats what the game developer designed it to run under. It's almost like a sound decoder, it runs whatever signal it's sent.

Same with GT5:P, once again all 3 checked (HDMI set to Automatic) it bypasses 720p and runs 1080p. Hence why I just leave it on automatic and let the PS3 do its thing, as all the games I have are 720p, except GT5:P of course. Follow...?

As it tells me on the display or TV what it's running at. So far it's never been on the wrong setting.

Unless other peoples equipment does it differently to mine... As I don't have to leave anything unchecked as it functions as how the game developers wanted it made.

I was answering your question - Why disable 1080i? Some games do default to 1080i over 720p, such as R6 Vegas. Thing is 1080i looks terrible in most cases, so it's best to just disable it so you never have to look at its hideousness, even if it is an accident!
