Im formatting my MCE rig later today, and wonder if anyone can advise me...

I need to play .mov , .avi , .mpg , .flac and .mp3 :)

I've been reading about FFDShow, and its better DVD quality, but then seem to see its not compatable, then someone else says it is ... any advise ?

If i install FFDShow, do i need powerdvd, RealplayerAlternative etc ?

I got the flac codec covered

I want the isntall as clean as possible obviously, so unnecessary codecs are a no-no

Thanks

Using

AMD Sempron 2800, 1gb DDR, nVidia 6100 onboard, Terratec Cinergy 2400i if it makes a difference

ffdshow, Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative are all the codecs you should need. You may come across some weired codec that you required but just install codecs as and when you need them. Packs are useless.

At the moment I only have the XviD codec installed as I do not watch much Real or QuickTime.

For DVD's you will need a DVD codec, Power DVD, WinDVD etc... If you install one of these then uninstall it the codec will be left behind. ;)

ffdshow is decompressor for XviD and DivX files. For DVD's you will need a DVD codec from WinDVD or similar.

-do you really need real alternative?, i can see why people have qta installed -for apple.com/trailers

I have a few .rmbv files, so yes. Pretty good picture considering the filesize. I've had to install a few more codecs. You do get sites with realtime movie in the window, so browser plugin is required.

Initial install
FFDSHOW (ffdshow scaling enabled)
Theatrekek (ffdshow scaling enabled)
Realtime Alternative

now plus the following
Ogg directshow filter
MPC directshow filter
Winamp + FLAC + MPC plugins

i 'think' the newer ffdshows can handle ogg now, i used to have to install corevorbis filter to play certain vidoes i had (sound wouldn't work), but they seem fine now with just the newer ffdshow

freee-codecs.com is a very good site for getting updates on your codecs :)

OGG+ & MPC audio didn't output to the digital out port with Media Portal and FFDSHOW audio decoder option, I did need those two directshow filters, oggcodecs_0.71.0946.exe and RadLightMPC_1.0.0.4.exe
