Hey,

I've finally decided I need to bite the bullet and stick up a site!

Where/What are people using at the minute?

Ideally I'd like roughly 5 or so pages, and a few galleries, facebook integration would be great but not a specific requirement.

Are there any good examples I could be pointed towards?

Cheers guys :)

I do know a bit of HTML, and I *could* code a page, but I'd prefer to opt for a template.

I'd obviously want it to look pretty professional.

You could do what I used to do, and use a host like 34sp. Then you can use Wordpress for the site as there are (or at least were) a few decent themes/styles for photography blogs, or purely for a photography site. 34sp also have a scripting page, so if you're feeling lazy you can enter all your sites info (ftp, etc) and it'll install the lot for you.

I honestly don't know if Wordpress is still as widely used now, or if there are better options, but it is VERY easy to install once you've read the instructions! 34sp had a shopping cart you could install too, which if I remember rightly, linked to paypal.

Basically they only use the more secure things there, and monitor things pretty closely.

for a bit of cash smugmug or zenfolio look good. I personally like flickr but consider your images property of the world once on flickr.

I've got a tumblr at the minute and I like how that auto updates my facebook feed, I've got a facebook profile purely for photography.

I'm about to buy a domain tonight from godaddy, anybody use them?

I don't know if I fancy a shopping cart, I know there is room to sell images etc but right now I want to concentrate on commissions and the like.

The problem being facebook is great for networking and showcasing, nearly everybody has it right?! Wrong! I've got a few people who are interested but don't have facebook/can't get access to it so want to look at my work on my own website.

Don't use Godaddy, they're crap.

Namecheap is the best one I've used, got quite a few domains with them at the moment. The domains seem to propagate really quickly too.

What make them crap? I don't know much about domains...

not just flickr, put them anywhere near the internet and youll lose any sort of control of your images. then you wade into the watermarking debate and the pros/cons.

I've had problems with the before and so have a few people I know. There's a website here that talks about the service: http://nodaddy.com/

I personally use NameCheap and they are great :)

Ok, I'll have a look later tonight at them see if I can get one.

Thanks for everyones help so far, I'll keep you updated with progress.
Looking more and more like Wordpress, would you pay for a template? Any recommended ones which would be suitable for photography?

I had nightmare problems with them about 5 years ago. They made repeated billing errors, and took payments for domains I no longer wanted and had told them so. Conveniently, they had no record of any contact from myself at all. Even sending them my copies of the emails wasn't good enough. They refused point blank to refund the money they took in error. I spend months arguing with them over it. To add insult to injury, the next year they sent me an email telling me they were about to take payment for the domain again. Yes, the one I'd told them on numerous occasions to cancel. I'd moved my hosting to another company 2 years before hand, which should have been a clue that everything was pointing to someone else's servers too!

Guess what? They had no record of any emails I'd sent, or records of the 3 or 4 phone calls I'd made to them because apparently they'd had some problems with their systems (yes, this is believable!).

They did the same thing to two of my mates, who were ironically the ones that referred me to them in the first place.

They may be okay now (for all I know), but I will NEVER use them again.

I think you'll find that every company has past customers that have had a bad experience.

I've used GoDaddy for ten years without any problem and they are generally the cheapest for registering domain names as you can find coupon codes nearly every time.

I wouldn't recommend using them for hosting, just as a domain registrar. Be careful of some UK registrars as they charge more for domain names and they some require up to two days to make changes to DNS settings and so on whereas on a larger registrar like Godaddy, you have full control and the changes seem to propogate within a few minutes.

I once registered a .co.uk with 1and1, they made me wait two days to put through a similar change.

I use vidahost, they're highly recommended here.

I've needed to use their support a few times and they've always replied back within 10 mins (at 2 in the morning a couple of nights ago!)
