Settlers 7 Demo available now

got demo over weekend, and really liked it, sort of back to original style of settlers, gfx i think are superb, with a really good level of detail. took me a little while to work out the prestige points and how to unlock and upgrade.

A tip i saw was to make lots of store houses. These act like the path flags in the older settlers game.

I've pre-ordered. DRM is harsh, but will see..

The buildings in-game seem to suggest you need a 1:1 ratio of most goods, but I presume the goods will be produced at different rates, so it might be more efficient for instance to use 2 woodcutters per sawmill ?

Some buildings use more then 1 resorce at a time, those are the ones you would need more buildings to supply with. I always build 1 extra for each type tho, can never go wrong with a nice stockpile :)

I wasn't really going to bother, since The Settlers Series became uninteresting to me after dropping the road economy after Settlers 2, but now that it's (possibly) back, I'm very keen.

As for the DRM: I'll wait for a working crack before buying the game.

I just hope it works, the BlueByte copy protection was remarakbly sophisticated. I remember hearing about bakeries suddenly producing boats and suchlike. Great system, I must say. It got a lot of people to buy the original game after they got hooked on it and then couldn't carry on for above reasons.

think i got settlers 2 demo from a demo disc on a pcgamer about 15 years ago, any more than that and id rather not admit to frankly but im hard pressed to find a series i enjoyed more up until they changed to the hero rubbish that seems to dog these sort of titles, if this is more back to the proper game then ill give it a bash, criminaly slow internet here, is actually quicker to drive an hour to a mates d/l the demo and drive back. will post what its like when i eventually get it and play it

I think, tbh, the time is coming where I'm going to get off the gaming bus.

Having zipped over to the s7 site to (maybe) get the demo, I played the vid they've got on the front page there.

It's a chat with the designers, and this guy is talking about the game, but what's interesting is what he's talking about.

There's a load of emphasis on customising your castle's appearance, then he starts talking about social networking, and how you'd post your castle on the forums you read, and blah blah blah.

It just struck me as a colossal fail, that they should be worrying so much about everything *but* the gameplay. Achievements, gamerscores, customising the look of your buildings...

And the commentary at one point was "this is why S7 will be fun... social networking!"

OK. I have a bridge I'd like to sell you. It will be great, because, social networking! You can paint your bridge different colours, customise the look of the bricks, and post pictures of it on your blog/twitter/facebook page! I'm not going to talk about whether you can use the bridge to walk or drive over, it hardly seems important :p

This is gaming today?

I'm hoping this is more like the game I am looking for than the last few efforts. PC gamer has made it out to be. I really want a grand city builder, not found a game like it since Knights and Merchants! Settlers 3 was a bit.

You know

Woodcutters > Sawmill > Wooden Board > Weaponsmith > Longbow > Barracks > Archer!

While requiring, builders, servants and specialised units!

After viewing some videos, it looks like it is, super, will try the demo when I acutally get a decent amount of time at home!

DRM is bad though so probably will only get it if it is perfect for what i'd like.
