Shader unlock success?

noooo, unlocking shaders doesnt reduct the life of your card?
It was originally designed in factory with that amount, they just turn them off....

How can something fail earlier for originally having that amount of shaders?
I think your getting confused with overclocking..
Overclocking on the other hands does shorten the life, because your making it run faster than its factory designed to run at...
Where as, if, say, it was made with 1600 pipelines, and they turn 300 off, so its bought with 1300, you can unlock it to reviel the full 1600, that isnt pushing it any harder, because its originally designed and made with them, your just turning them on...
So life of the product isnt changed at all.

Thing is with OcUK "branded" products they won't be a set card, for instance they might be whatever batch of OEM cards they could get a good deal on so one week they might be Asus cards another week Sparkle, etc. its also somewhat luck of the draw - in the past I've had retail boxed cards with a nice after market cooler turn up and other times I've got plain reference designs or even reference design but with a cheapy OEM heatsink/fan on it.

Man up and buy 2 x 6970s!

I've had both a 6950 and 6970 (both DCII's), and I'll be honest - the 6950 was quicker - it overclocked MUCH higher, just a shame I couldn't unlock it. At stock, the 6970 was maybe 2fps up on the 6950 - can't see the justification for spending the extra £60 or so.

It doesn't bother me if I can't unlock the 6950s, I was just curious on the chances of it happening with the current cards.

Thanks for the info Rroff, I didn't know that's what the OcUK cards were.

I bought two HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X Turbo cards within the space of 2 weeks of one another from OCUK ( sept / october this year ) and both flashed to the 6970 shader spec fine

I was going to purchase a cheaper 6950 for the second card as the HIS card had gone up in price after I bought the first one on a this week only deal, But I thought If i did that it may not work and knew I would have a very good chance again of flashing the second card if it was the same as the first card which I did :D
