Shall i give WoW a go?

Wow is a great game that (for me) doesn't require a stupid commitment, there isn't really a storyline that I will forget and ruin the experience if I don't play for a while and I can either play for 1 hour a week or 100 hours a week and it will still be fun,

I bought the expansion on release day and have only managed to get to level 73 because I have had other things to do with my life,

If you are the kind of person who hates WoW because you got addicted to it then you need to realise that it wasn't the game but something lacking in your life that caused the problem, If you hadn't discovered WoW you can almost guarantee that something else would have taken it's place

Is it still around 11 quid a month to subscribe? I'm not going to start playing any mmorpg yet but if I did then I may consider this one. I like the look of vanguard saga of heroes - looks more adult than WoW's cartoon like graphics, a little more child like imo, nothing wrong with that but that's just how I see it. Also there is, of course, Eve Online which I've heard is amazing too. I'd probably give several trials a go then make my decision. Thankfully what does stop me doing this atm is the fact that they are all or nearly all subscription. I know Guild Wars isn't so that may get me eventually. :D

I'll be honest, I have never ever played any MMORPG. I find the thought of playing so scringing I just can't do it. I have said it countless times on these types of threads. Go watch "Make love not Warcraft" episode of south Park, I'm determined not to be the 40 year old, wifeless, jobless 40 year old zombie in that episode :p

I just find it laughable, I mean playing a wizard game? lol..... I cba to explain anymore :p

Just for the love of the human race, dont do it.

WoW is great, i have been playing for just over a year now and am not addicted at all, i had a 3 month break over the summer, had no problem stopping playing, i have since started again when WOTLK released and am currently at level 79. I have a full time job, go out with mates and go to the gym 3 nights a week, WoW has not had any bad effects on me at all, its just something fun to do in any spare time you have.

Have you ever heard the phrase "work expands to fill time available"? Well with wow it's "the amount you play wow expands to fill time available".

Don't do it dude, just pick up baldur's gate 2 or sommat.

If you are happy to use up A LOT of your time over christmas to really get into it - give it a go.

But remember that it can take up too much time.

If you haven't really got the time to spare - try a normal fps instead as they end quite quickly :D

There is far, far worse out there.

I really don get why people always go on about how they lost their friends to WoW, therefore its the only time thats EVER happened in human history.

Some people are easily addicted. Years and years ago, a friend of mine pretended to be sick for a week off school so he could play Transport Tycoon all day and night. Ive seen friends loose jobs to playing Counter Strike and Unreal Tourney constantly. And yet ive not seen people go on agianst these games like this Anti-WoW Crusade thats on these forums.

If your easily addicted to games, then you have a problem. Not the game. You.

This culture of blaming someone else for your own mistakes has really got to stop.

i played the game for around 3 months in that time i realised only go for this game if you want to do endless grinding which gets boring really fast also traveling any decent amount of distance takes ages :(

Why not try Runes of Magic? It's gone into open beta and its free.

Not played WoW myself, but felt it was too late to get into it. I am not sure I will ever really get into an MMO, but am tempted to try RoM, as it's new, and free.

Although the quests are repetitive it does a good job of masking the grinding that you are doing.

I HATE grinding, but I don't mind doing stuff for quests.

I think to get into wow you have to play it a fair bit at first till you at least get a mount. And its important to find a class and race you like playing. When i first started playing i found it hard to get into, so i kept trying other classes and races. Untill i found my gnome warlock. Which i really got into and found fun playing and i still find it fun playing.

I think a good rule of thumb is, if you have other games you enjoy playing and a job and a life and so on, you can play wow like a normal game and not get addicted. If you dont really have much going on in your life, wow can take it over jsut like any other rpg or mmo. Just in my opinion anyways.

One of my mates tried the trail, not seen him for about 3 years now, last I heard he was still alive, very pale and very long hair.

Give it a go you may love it.

A gnome warlock :(

Though I play alliance I hate gnomes I really do - no idea why but I truly do. :p

Few good and bad things about WoW. The bad things currently:

1) You need to buy WoW, TBC & WoTLK to get to the level others are at (If the game gets your interest).
2) It will take you months to get to where other are now.
3) It's imbalanced. Other classes are CLEARLY better than others and if you are from an FPS mostly 'skill based' games then it will really grind your gears PVP wise.
4) It can be a waste of your life and suck you in completley.
5) You have to pay £8 a month or whatever.
6) Raiding and being in a decent guild is fairly hard work and you have to have some dedication, which often means sacrificing real life.

Good things about WoW:

1) Controlled and in moderation, its a fun game!
2) The social aspect is unlike anything else I've expereienced online (massive communities and guilds, always someone to help, kill, laugh at, etc)
3) WoTLK has focussed the game for more "casual" gamers. Instances aren't as long and raiding isn't AS hard (although subject to interpretation and personal experience).
4) You can pretty much do what you want within reason and rules of the game.

Speaking as a person who has played the game for two years and now stopped before the latest expansion, I think my view is more negative of it now. However, the two years I played it were great fun and I met some decent people along the way. (Whilst still maintaining real life).

These companies do use psychologists and techniques to help develop some level of addiction. With WoW its the constant "I have better gear than you" thing due to its massive item list.

I have been through the 9 hours a night, 16 hours a day at the weekend, days off sick from work phase, then suddenly overnight was bored as hell and only logged on for 10 mins day for months.

Last time I was playing was for probably 8-10 hours per week and the occasional all day session at the weekend. I stopped it just as easy when WAR came out and am now an occasional player on there intead/
