cheapest option is a crossover cable costs about a fiver if that

use it to send internet access from the main machine connected to the modem onto the second machine

obviously the first machine must be turned on for the second machine to use the internet

I also want to connect my laptop to my PC using wireless but what would I need is it just a wireless router I need and if so what speed ?

Id recommend a modem/router, they can be had for anything from £30 to the cost of the sky. Basically, you connect both your PCs to the router, then your router will connect direct to your telephone line. The only difficult bit is settign up the connection, but even that isnt too difficult and i got it working with no previous router knowhow.

Not sure whether this image will eb of use, but i knocked this up.

Yea thats cool, so what does the 'network lead' plug into on the computer?

Because of the motherboard you have according to the spec in your sig, you should have a network lead in your PC already.

The top half of the image, is what the onnection lead will look like. The bottom half is an image of the socket for the lead, you will have two sockets like this, one in your PC and one in your router, the wire connects between the two. If you dont have a connection like this in your PC, then you will need a standard networking card, they can be had for a few quid now.
