Erm, ive been shaving for ages now, but i have always wondered when ever i see people doing it on TV they always do it different to me. I am refering to the bit from the neck upto the jaw line. They always seem to go up from the neck to the jaw. Now i always thought that you were not supposed to go against the way the hair grows (against the grain). Now my hair on my neck to the jaw grows downwards (jaw to neck). Now i getting myself confused!? :D So today i went the other way, neck to jaw and got a closer shave but got massive shaving rash.

What is the correct way!?

Thanks

lol

I always shaved down, with the hair. A decent sharp razor will still produce a very clean and close shave if you're using good foam or gel.

These days I use a good quality electric shaver though, less skin irritation, not as close but I prefer it like this, using foam/gel all the time irritated my skin and dried it out not matter how much moisturiser or cremes I put on.

neck to jaw.. its the only way to get in close there with a proper razor..

edit: i dont use gels/foams.. i just use water..

I've always gone jaw to neck. Feels better while shaving and afterwards. Can be annoyingly itchy if I do it the other way.

Whichever way here, using an electric. It still makes my skin irratated doing it at all, so most the time I simply don't bother ;)

Though I use an electic job, for the neck I do it upwards as you get a better shave, though it is against the grain it doesn't irrate me.

You're *supposed* to go with the grain. But to be honest just do what feels better for you - you don't get any rash from going against the grain and get a closer shave from it then stick with it. A lot of people don't go against the grain as they get bad stubble rash from it.

If you're not getting a close enough shave, use a flanel soaked in really hot water on your face for 30s or so - then use your shaving gel/oil/mousse/soap shave and use a cold flanel - it'll make your shave that little bit closer.

Jaw to neck. Don't like it the other way around and i'm not even fussed if it's a close shave or not.

I think thats they way to go. I also find that if i shave before i shower, i get less spots.

Going up hurts more, is more likely to cut, and is harder to do. But it leaves a much smoother shave. AFAIK professionals always shave up, even with cut-throats.

I used to get really bad shaving rash shaving either way! But nowadays never get it as I have a shower first and as soon as I've finished in the shower I have a shave (was told that was the best idea by a mate and it works!). Skin doesnt get irritated that way as its the same as the hot flannel approach I suppose!

I shave neck to chin to answer the original question and then use aftershave balm to stop any irritation occuring afterwards. Sorted!

So true. I've never cut myself going down, but have countless times going up. I go down, then up, then across. Gives me a VERY close shave on my neck.

One thing I don't understand is how to shave the sides of my chin. The bit that's still part of your chin, almost your cheek. I've never been able to get that as close as I'd like.

Note: I'm using a Gillete Mach 3 with that vibrate/pull the hair straight gimmick.

Since got a Mac3 (the cheap one without battery thing) never cut myself using the following l337 picture

One question..

Its it

* Hot water shave then cold
* Cold water shave then hot

I generally shave downwars on my face and upwards from the neck to the jaw.

I did however go against grain the other week and my god what a close shave felt lovely, beard still grew back just as quick, my beard grows back really quick which is annoying, as i never have enough time to shave in the morning.

People used to laugh about the way my beard took ages to grow, now I laugh back as only have to shave every 3 days or so :D That extra 10mins in bed each morning is soooo good!
