Afternoon chaps :) Hope this dosent break the "Medical thread" rule (dont think it does!)

Anyway, recently I have been getting a bit of razor burn / shaving rash on my face. It dosent look rash-like when the redness has went down, more of a discoloration of the skin. What I am after is some advice on moisturisers / after shave balms, I have fairly sensitive skin & I am on trimethoprim which drys out my skin quite badly.

At the moment I use King of Shaves shaving gel & after shave balm but the balm aggrovates the rash more (waste of £4.99 :()

What would you all recommend?

Cheers,

Craig

Try shaving in the shower, let the water run over your face so it gets nice & warm then apply the gel and shave.

I always get a much nicer shave this way and less irritation than a normal shave at the sink.

I used to get this but put it down to bad technique. You need hot water/steam first to open your pores so use a flannel and some hot water. Then you need to shave very slowly and make sure you don't go over the area more than once. Clean the razor every 2 strokes but make sure they are very small strokes as well.

Shaving in the shower beats all. Use a half decent razor, doesn't need to have batteries or 17 blades.

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer shaving when I can see what I'm doing in a mirror, otherwise I'll probably end up severing some vitally important blood vein and dying a horrific (but probably very clean...) death in the shower. :)

Wash your face with water as hot as you can bear to get it nice and clean, open the pores and soften the beard.

Then shave with a new blade, rinsed in cold water. Using hot water makes the edge expand and therefore blunts it.

Then when you are all done, rinse your face with copious cold water to close the pores again.

Finally use the after shave balm of your choice. I like the Nivea one.

As soon as you feel the blade start to drag, change it.

I've got a twist n lock mirror what sticks to the shower side panel. To stop it fogging up I just rub some suds on it then rinse them off. :) You can get a really close shave, once with the grain, once against, very handy if you're going out to kiss girls.

Yeah, there is a cure, shave every day, but don't shave after one day, then after 3 days, if it's irregular, you'll get rash. It could also be that you can some skin allergy to whatever you're using, try soap instead next time.

The best products i've found for razor burn/rash are:

Brace Soldier code Blue ~£13 - excellent product that is very good for razor burn whilst not being too harsh although it does leave you skin a touch sticky.

Nickel Contre Feu ~£17 - Only really good for mild razor burn. Personally I use it on top of the above as it stops the above leaving sticky residue. Contre-feu is more of a soothing moisturiser imo.

Tend skin solution ~£10 - This stuff is seriously strong, and will help with razor burn and ingrown hairs immensly but you'll need to use an aftershave balm afterwards as its very drying on your skin and it stings like aftershave when you put it on your skin. I only use it for the occasional bad patch of razor burn, and if your skin is already dry I'd be cautious about using it.

I guess there are different remedies depending on what type of beard you have. I get a rash when shaving with a machine, and I have tried several different types.

I use gilette mach III razor blades with the gilette gel. I wet my face with warm water, then fill the sink with warm water and start shaving, 1/2 strokes then clean the razor. When finished, i clean with cold water and use Aftershave Balm - Nivea or other. I usually don't have a rash. I shave every 2/3 days, when required.

I have this little area that i could shave at all day long yet its still ever so slightly "beard like"...i really dont get on with shaving against the grain. So just start at top and work down cheek, down neck over chin and repeat for other side. But would love the wee stupid beardy thing gone. Use a 4 blade razor and king of shaves gel, shave every day in shower.

Ideas ?

I used to get razor burn no matter what products i used, technique etc etc.

I decided to change to an electric razor and i have have not had a problem since.
Same, I bought a Phillips jobby that has a handy moisturiser dispenser built in, in case my skin is particularly bad. Hate shaving, it hurts so much.
