Shifting IDE data to SATA.

At the moment i'm still running an 80gb IDE and a 160gb IDE HDDs. About to order Western Digital Raptor 74GB WD740ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM and Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB ST3500630AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM. The 74gb for games etc and the 500gb pretty much for storage.

However, i have a good 200gb of data on my IDEs that i need, but i read in another post that booting 2 SATAs and setting up RAID wipes the drives (I have never set up RAID or SATAs before). I would like to know the best way to get my data across.

The plan at the moment is plug in the 2 SATAs, install Windows on the 74gb and set them up as RAID etc, plug in my 2 IDES as slaves and just drag and drop the required data, but i would like a more experienced opinion.

After transfering the data will probably scrap the IDEs as i most likely don't have enough room in my case and also because newer mobos have only one IDE port and that would be for optical drives so i want to be SATA only.

Also, reading up on it, people on the board seem to have a lot of problems with SATA drives corupting or whatever and having to back them up a lot. I've never had this problem with my IDEs. Is it experienced a lot more with SATA?

Firstly you don't need to RAID SATA drives and in your case you don't want to. To use RAID efficiently you need 2 matching disks, which you don't have.

The best plan of action for you is:
  • Remove all the HDDs from your PC
  • Install the Raptor as a single drive (RAID disabled)
  • Install Windows - no drivers should be required for single drive operation
  • Add the new Seagate, create and format a partition on it using the Disk Managment control panel applet
  • Install the 2 IDE drives, they should be detected automatically, if not import them in Disk Management
  • Copy the stuff from the IDE disks to the Seagate SATA drive
  • Shutdown and remove the IDE drives if desired.

SATA corruption is an old problem that isn't really seen anymore, it was an issue with the very early implementations only.

Thanks. I have only formatted and partioned the 80gb IDE i currently own, and that was for installing Windows. Presumably, i will have to format and create a partition on the Raptor aswell when i install Windows for the first time? Also, where is the Disk Management application located? I can only find Device Manager atm.

The Windows installer will create and format a partition on the Raptor for you, this will default to the full size of the disk although you can change this if you want. If you do you'll need to create another partition in the free space yourself later.

The easiest way to get to Disk Management is to right click on My Computer and pick Manage, then pick Disk Management from the tree on the left, it'll open in the window on the right.
