Shipping my 1975 Rolls Royce from the UK to Mexico

Haven’t done a thread on here for a while but thought I’d post something up about this as it’s a bit different to the usual stuff I buy.

Had some money burning a hole in my pocket and my current barges were being far too reliable, so I started looking for something else to buy. I noticed that anything Rolls Royce or Bentley here was selling for £30k+, which seemed rather a lot compared to what they go for in the UK. I decided to take a chance and found this 1975 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow in Kent for £7k. I paid a friend to go and check it out and he said it was pretty good for the money, so I decided to buy it and put it on a boat from Southampton to Galveston Texas.

It took around a month to arrive to Galveston, then I had to pay someone to trailer it from Galveston to Laredo, then it sat for around a month at Galveston while they did the import process. This wasn't cheap as the taxes are quite steep, plus you have to bribe people to get it through with no issues.

The import process took quite a while, which made me increasingly nervous as there's basically no way to insure it while it's in the import compound and I was wondering if it had "gone missing". Finally though, they let me know it was ready to pick up, and told me they'd arranged a temporary plate for me to drive it 3.5hrs back to my house. Only 50% of that turned out to be true.

We arrived at the border and the car was ready and waiting. They'd done all the papers correctly for me to register it, but they'd "forgotten" the temporary plate. The guy who handed it over to me told me to give a few hundred pesos to anyone who stopped me, which may well have worked if I was in an old F150 with Texas plates, but probably not in a Rolls Royce on UK plates. I decided to risk it anyway though, and within a mile realized this probably wasn't a good idea as the car attracted even more attention than I'd imagined it would.

I used to have a job driving Ferraris and Lamborghinis around the French riviera so I'm used to people looking at me as I drive past, but this was something else. I suspect it's more for the steering wheel being on the "wrong" side rather than the car itself but either way, you feel like a celebrity.

I decided to drive very gently on the way home as I knew it would be a long drive, with heavy traffic at the end, and I didn't want it to overheat. It sat at 60-70MPH with no issues whatsoever: even compared to my L322 or Lincoln, it's an exceptionally quiet and comfortable car and unlike anything I've driven before. You can control everything with the lightest of touches, and you feel like you're sitting in an old library.

In terms of issues, the windows don't work, neither does the AC, and I'm not sure if the stereo is broken or just too complicated for me to operate. I'll address those in the coming weeks - I feel like they're pretty minor given the age and reputation of the car.

I made it home with no issues - once I've got the proper plates I'll take it on a few road trips and share some more photos.

I put a bit of cardboard under it as a precaution, I've always thought that if an old British car isn't leaking fluids, it probably means it doesn't have any fluids.

Call me a cynic, but in a car which presumably has a fair amount of insultation in a climate like Mexico, I feel like on the contrary, these might be quite major issues :D

Haha yes, but I meant in the wallet destroying sense. Should be a lot cheaper to fix than the suspension / braking system for example.

white won't absorb too much heat , bodywork looks impeccable, can we see the engine bay ?

Do you need a fuel additive of some kind , does it need lead

I’ll take a photo of the engine bay later and upload it here. I just put premium fuel and an octane booster additive which seemed to be fine.

Interest to learn more of the costs of shipping to Mexico / import taxes etc!

I watched it before buying this - absolutely loved it and it was one of the reasons I got this one.

Shipping was £1500, import taxes were around $4500. What with the cost of getting it inspected, trailering it between places etc, the total import cost wasn’t far off the cost of the car.

If I don't see a photo of you in a linen suit with a Panama hat then it's just not good enough.

Best I can do is a photo of me in cheap H&M clothes with a Dos Equis beer.

Have you ever made a thread about living in Mexico? I've never visited but am fascinated with Mexican culture.

Never have but feel free to ask me anything you want - I’ve seen/done a lot since I came here so can answer most questions.

Having recently watched "Long Way Up", the Mexico part of the journey was where they were most cautious to limit attracting attention.

Was that all just bs for the show or do you genuinely have to take care when going out? Obviously the Rolls is going to stand out!

Short answer, it was all BS for the show and I don’t understand why they did it as they went through other genuinely dangerous places before and didn’t bat an eyelid. It’s true that some areas of Mexico are dangerous, particularly around the border and certain states like Sinaloa and parts of Tamaulipas, but most of it isn’t, especially if you have local assistance.

I’ve driven all over the country in cars that are uncommon here (Jags, Range Rovers etc) and I’ve never had an issue. That said, I take precautions - I don’t drive late at night unless it’s in a major city, and I always use the toll roads which are well maintained and heavily policed. If you go wandering off into the countryside late at night in an area you don’t know, you could taking a bit of a risk depending on the state.

In terms of the Rolls, I’d happily drive it to most places I’ve driven my other cars to, my only concern would be avoiding poor quality roads as I wouldn’t want it breaking down in the middle of nowhere.
 
Awesome thread, thanks for sharing! Out of interest, how did you end up in mexico (gf?) and what do you do out there? It seems like you're in the middle of nowhere, although I guess it's the suburbs of Monterrey?

Good guess - I met a Mexican girl while I was living in France and we decided to move back here. She originally wanted to stay in Europe but I didn’t think we could have the lifestyle we wanted with the jobs we could get in France / the UK so we decided to give it a go here.

I have a small business that does English teaching / translations / adult education and I do a bit of work for a private school in the morning although I won’t be doing that for much longer as I finally feel confident enough to rely 100% on the income from the business.

In terms of the location, we live in a bit of an unusual place in the sense that it’s pretty close (around 20 minutes) from Monterey’s business district but still feels like you’re in the middle of the countryside. In most of the rest of Monterey, you have to go almost an hour out from the centre to actually leave the city, so we’re quite lucky to be able to live here. I got the land cheap and we built a relatively normal house so I’m the poor one out of our neighbours :p

Fixed 3 of the 4 windows this morning by flicking a reset switch in the fuse box. I’d still like to take the door cards off and grease everything though as they go up and down very slowly.

Here’s a couple of engine related shots. It’s a 6.75 V8, supposedly produces about 180BHP. Needless to say, it isn’t that fast.

Have you always been into Yank motors too? You've had some fairly tasty classic models, including the Lincoln Town Car in the background there.

Yep, absolutely love them. One of the difficulties of living here is seeing so many US classics every day and not having the time / money / space to rescue them all.

I really want to get a late 50s Bel Air in poor condition and put a modern engine / transmission in there but I need to build another garage first as that would be car #5 and we only have 3 garage spaces.
 
Do you get much grief in Mexico? Other than Cancun most of my friends think it's a mafia run country and most places are no-go. A lad in a Roller who doesn't look like Fidel Castro is making me think otherwise! Lol.

No grief at all. Like any big country, there are some areas which are best to avoid but most places are fine. Particularly in Monterrey, Cancún and some parts of Mexico City, there are loads of people with far more money than me so although the car stands out, it’s nowhere near the most expensive car people will see driving around. Last night I went to dinner and saw an Urus, an X5M, 4 Cayenne Turbos amongst other £50k+ cars in the restaurant car park. I’d say the Rolls was in the bottom 20% of everything there value-wise.

I sold the one in the OP for just over £10k more than I had into it and decided to put up a test advert to gauge interest. Turns out these are really, really popular here and I’ve already taken deposits on the two I’ve just bought. Once they arrive I’m going to book two more slots on the ship for one more Shadow and a Bentley Turbo R.

As a side note do you speak Spanish or native Mexican.

Native Mexican as such doesn't exist, there are various different indigenous languages but nobody speaks those where I live - they're mainly limited to small, very poor communities. I speak Spanish, and while there are some differences between the Spanish from Spain and the Spanish spoken here, they're still fairly similar.

And there was me enjoying this thread for the exclusivity of reading about an RR in Mexico ;)

Sorry :cry: Assuming this continues to work I'll be bringing a variety of exclusive stuff so don't worry. Plus I still want a Silver Shadow for myself, so I guess when the interest dries up I'll keep the last one I import.
 
The US one is now ready to collect, so I'm hoping to pick it up over the next couple of days. Only issue is that the idiot truck driver decided to load it onto his trailer by taking a run up and flooring it, and smacked the underneath of the car on the ramps hard enough that the seller immediately called me about it.

The car now won't go into reverse and the exhaust is extremely loud. I'm hoping the transmission itself is OK, and that he's just damaged the linkage or the selector box. He has verbally admitted responsibility but who knows what he'll say to his insurance - if the selector box is damaged then they're not that cheap, especially once I've paid the shipping and import taxes. I'm very irritated about the whole thing - it actually has better ground clearance than a lot of modern cars so how on earth he could screw up so badly is beyond me. Anyway, it looks nice sitting on the trailer.

Let us know what the damage is, the frigging tool.

Picked it up today, good news is the selector box seems fine, bad news is he’s damaged the gear linkage, exhaust back box and the spare tyre carrier. The engine sump also has a massive dent that wasn’t there before. I suspect he’s not going to like the bill I’m about to send him but let’s see.

Thanks - yes, those are the people I use for most of the spares. They're not exactly cheap, but their prices are fair when you consider the rarity of the parts / cost of the cars when new.

I'm about to order from them actually, as the shipper agreed to pay for the damage. Only issue is the mechanics are all on holiday as it's easter, so it'll have to sit in my drive for a couple of weeks before anything major gets done to it.

Haha yeah, I saw that today and commented on it. The people who are saying you have to pay 30k+ for a working one are on a different planet, there's no end of slightly scruffy but very useable ones under 10k.
 
Some good Rolls Royce news today. Firstly, the two English ones are finally at the port and ready to board the ship, and secondly, I received the compensation from the transport company and have managed to fix everything they damaged apart from the sump for £10 thanks to an old-school mechanic I know, a hydraulic press and some adjustment to the gear linkage.

I did however almost crash it yesterday when the handbrake let go without warning, but we'll gloss over that, particularly as it was definitely nothing to do with me driving it for 40 minutes a few days before with the handbrake on, like a total moron.
