Having never bought quality shoes until a year or so ago I am now completely sold on the idea of shoemakers shoes.

My first pair where a pair of Alden shoes which I am very happy with but they are not so easy to find in the uk.

Trickers seem to have a sale on at the moment so I have ordered a couple of pairs of shoes which would normally cost £500 ish for around £200. I don't know what to expect from them but they should be here in a couple of days.

I am also quite pleased with a pair of Cheaney shoes I have been using for a few months, the quality seems to be quite good and they are also very comfortable.

I heard that Herring makes nice shoes but I have never tried them.

I also hear good things about
www.vass-shoes.com

So who else makes decent shoes without going completely crazy and spending £3k on a pair of bespoke shoes. I am not really looking to buy more now but I would not mind hearing people thoughts on the brands out there.

well the main traditional ones are in Northampton

Church
John Lobb
Crockett and Jones
Cheaney
Barker

three of those brands are available via that Herring site you linked to, you could also take a trip to the factory shops in Northampton and check them all out in person

there is also Loake which offers cheaper options though some of their shoe production is outsourced to India

Loake make different ranges. Their 1880 range is good.

Take a look at Herring Shoes. Their own brand stuff is good. But if Herring sell the brand then they should be good.

Crockett & Jones imo are one of the very best, def better than Cheaney (I have both), like you I'm totally converted to quality shoes & would never go back.

I'm a Church's man, I have 5 pairs all the same size and all fit perfectly. Also have a pair of Loake 1880's which I really like but need insoles to make them more comfortable.

Lots of folk back the Loakes.

I had a pair. Was the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever owned. And they were also dangerously slippery whenever I walked on the flagstones in the town centre on a wet day: walked like I'd **** myself with the teflon-like grip. Was delighted when the soles wore out after 8 months.

You can pick up Alden shoes at Drake's, but generally at the price point for UK manufacturers I think C&J handgrade are a good option especially if you can pick them up in the sales. I think Edward Green are a nice step up in terms of finishing but are considerably more expensive. The pricing of Vass has increased over the years but another overseas option is Carmina that I've picked up some pairs recently and was impressed. Slightly cheaper might be Carlos Santos or Meermin.

Probably better off with a Dainite style sole if you're venturing outside on that sort of surface.

Can anyone recommend decent shoes in size 13 or 14 UK / 46 or 48 EU in an ultra-narrow fit? I typically wear the Justin Reece Oliver shoes in size 14 but they're not high quality.

Another Loake fan here. I find them extremely comfortable and can usually pick them up for around £120-£150.

I do however recommend looking after them (e.g. wooden shoe trees and a decent polish such as Saphir).

I'm not loyal to a particular brand, depends what shoe styles I like at the time and if there are deals on. Bit of a shoe w**** tbh.

I wear Loake brogues to work as they are comfortable and are cheaper to replace. I have some Herring shoes (made by Cheaney) and Loake country boots with rubber soles, so that's my winter wear. Then I have some other pairs by Cheaney and Jeffery West that are for weekends and special occasions. JF have a more avant-garde look so are nice for a change.

In between all that I also wear some Barker and Church pairs depending on mood and occasion. Sometimes it nice to have the choice. I fancy trying a pair of Trickers next or maybe even a bespoke pair, however it's not like I don't have other pairs to wear first.

All my shoes are comfortable, some do need some breaking in. The only shoes I avoid are those from lines made in India, made this mistake when I was young, sooo uncomfortable.

Have been looking for a pair of black oxfords for a little bit, plenty around the £150-£250 mark but can't manage to find anything that look decent quality for more like £100. I know it's probably asking a lot at the price, but does anyone know anywhere that might have what I'm after?
