I always buy cheap shoes. Always have done. They only ever last a few months!!

Cheap for me is £29!

I need to spend more. But, my budget is £70....

Any ideas of good shoes to go for?

I need them for work. Shop work so nothing industrial. Tough, not steel toe. Decent looking.

I like Dr Martins but too expensive for me.

I know, long term they last longer but my budget is tight as wages low.

Any advice be good...

I've had a few pairs of Clarks over the years, you can get them relatively cheap nowadays too I think?

Clarks.

Good price quality ratio.
Try clarks outlet. Even better value!

I spend more on (sport) trainers as I spend more time in trainers.

Clarks. Easily last me 12+ months vs 3-4 for the skate shoes I used to wear. £70 will get you a decent pair, and consider you're currently spending £30 every 3-4 months vs £70 for 12+ months, should cost you less in the long run.

Yup, quite a few up on Amazon, or in their outlet store (generally last season designs but honestly who cares?)

I currently have some nice Gore-tex lined ones which were £65 from Amazon (RRP was closer to double that!)

I'm going to agree with Clarks. But also throw in a second option; Merrel Jungle Moc's. They look a little "old person" but a fantastically comfortable with big thick soles and inner lining. I used to use them for walking everywhere and could wear them all day. If you get the black version they won't look too much like walking shoes.

Shoes - Clarks
Trainers - Sketchers

tbh for shop work on my feet all day I'd want trainers, sketchers do have some 'pretend to be work shoes' trainers..

I can only tolerate proper shoes for formal stuff, basically if I'm in a suit, which is almost never.

"The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes "Boots" theory of socioeconomic unfairness."

Rather a brilliant observation by Terry Pratchett.

I like you was buying £30 shoes every few months. They would crucify my feet for a few weeks before becoming wearable of a brief period before they fall apart. I bought a pair of DM shoes for £70 off the rainforest and they lasted me over a year of daily wear. The wore in quickly and I was not crippled. It pay to spend a few quid more on your shoes.

They have gone up to around 100 now but still worth it. My last pair is over two years old.

Are you a top earner at work? You could get a matching Gucci belt too.

Barker do some cracking shoes, mine are still going, years later. They're found in general shoe shops as well as having a website.

Was thinking of this Terry Pratchett bit a little while back as my washing machine had broken down, I went to the laundrette and there were some regular customers in there who knew the woman running the place. It costs £4 for a wash and about another £2 to dry the clothes there, if you've got kids and had to go say twice a week (and that's super conservative) then that's equivalent to buying a new washing machine each year whereas a new washing machine will last 10 years.

Though I suspect in lots of cases it is living situations and not having access to one/not being able to install one rather than affordability.

I guess these days we've generally (save for housing/accommodation costs) got it so good compared to previous generations in so far as most things like that are relatively cheap including shoes, work boots etc.. A soldier who wants some better boots need only spend £150 or £200 yet earns tens of thousands of pounds per year, ditto to a construction worker.

In terms of proper leather shoes, these have been recommended on here before:

I think they're kinda at the low-end/entry-level of "good" leather shoes. There are various other Northampton shoe manufacturers that (AFAIK) make better and more expensive shoes and boots too.

There was also some hipster guy someone linked to on here once who seems to customise (not sure he actually manufactures or just kinda part assembles) shoes for people, forgotten the website though, maybe someone else can link to it?
