Shogun 2 ... Worth £7.99?

Of all the TW games that I have owned Shogun II is the one that I have enjoyed the least.! Whilst it has been well received by many I have struggled to get much enjoyment from playing it. I have got all the DLC's and have tried Darth Mod or Vanilla and I have concluded that it is the Japanese aspect of game which I like the least, so in that sense I'm stuffed.
I do like the European aspect to the Medieval editions in the TW series. I also loved playing RTW, in fact I have recently bought that one again when it was on sale through Steam.

I just really hope that they remake RTW as I have yet to get more than a third through a campaign of STW II without losing the will to carry on.

I would prefer Shogun if the unit names were recognisable english and/or the in game voices were "Monkey" style japanised english speach. I find it hard to get into the game when even a simple spearman unit is called in its native japanese word, its like having to learn the language. Alright if you like 100% realism, but not so much if you are not bothered by that. Unless I'm missing some option in the game to turn this off. Do the units in Rome speak Latin?

If you had posted what you have just done in the twcenter forums they would have hung you as an heretic :D
It seems that it is highly thought of in having the authentic language, costume and speeches etc in the native tongue. How accurate it is I do not know but in RTW it was in English and I enjoyed the rousing Generals speeches before his troops went into battle.
I'm not sure if the monkey accent one would have worked for me, I would have been more inclined to be laughing rather than directing the armies but maybe it would have worked better than the Japanese language used.
I did use a mod to get rid of those big balloons that some of the troops wore on their shoulders.

Yes, I can imagine there will be some who get pretty anal about athenticity in these sort of games, but I don't remember the french units speaking french in Medi II, or the irish units speaking gaelic etc. I found the game much easier to get to grips with when you could look at a unit and tell by its name pretty much what it was. Even if some of the words were were frenchish for example it was still pretty clear what was what. But with japanese you have no chance, you have to go by the little white icons on each unit. And call me old fashioned but I like it when a unit says "We're under attack" or something rather than "Wareware wa kogeki o ukete iru!" or whatever it is they say.

I think it depends how removed the language is.
Japanese is good to have in the game as it really reminds the majority of 'western' players of the setting, and the difference in culture that the game is based around. I think it was a perfect idea.
In comparison; the use of a single language in Rome and MedII wasn't quite so much a bother as most of those nations' languages are directly related to more modern familiar languages (English is pretty much made of every european language lol).
Even then though, if you listen carefully, there are phrases here and there in the native tongue...

Highly unlikely, it's a pretty new game, still £30 on Steam so even if it's 66% off, it won't be cheaper than £10 which is still more than what it cost at Play.

Thanks for that dude, gonna order soon from play then :). Does any1 know if the retail disc version can be activated through steam??

cheers

It can be activated n Steam :)

Good thing too because I bought the complete Total War pack that was £8 in the autumn sale.

The first Shogun is incredibly difficult to play... it has obtuse controls by today's standards. Not much story being missed, unless you really want to play the Mongol Invasion expansion.

Well it was like that in Shogun 1... And the tutorial goes through it quite well. Encyclopaedia also describes them easily, if you want to figure out unit roles.

I'll quote a small part of a post I made at another forum if it helps.

Religion

Shinto-Buddhism - The accepted norm religion, most provinces begin as fully Shinto-Buddhist...
Christianity - Introduced when European Traders first landed at Japan, early guns, extreme conversion rates and bonuses for taking the risky route, and being public enemy number one... or second to...
Ikko-ism - Offshoot of the accepted Buddhism, radical, and a lot of religious fervour fuelling the followers, extreme conversion rates, unique monk traits and special Warrior Monks, you'll get on everyone else's nerves and the Ikko Ikki are the only followers of this religion. Allies hard to come by...

Agents

Ninja - Assassin, Saboteur, Spy...
Metsuke - The Daimyo's Secret Police, can bribe armies and castle-towns, apprehend enemy agents and have them jailed or executed, little escapes their sight, even Ninjas or...
Monks/Missionary - Converts populations, converts enemy agents, demoralises enemy armies, inspire friendly armies, oversee settlements...
Geisha - They will kill you... somehow

Other terms
Shogun - Warlord ruler of all Japan
Daimyo - Warlord/Leader or Ruler of a Clan
General - Leader of an army under a Daimyo's rule
Samurai - The military créme, well trained, difficult to waver
Ashigaru - Peasants, usually toiling the ground, but by no means lack military expertise. Great fighters in their own right, back bone of a starting army.
Katana - Sword most are familiar with, great for close-quarter combat
No-Dachi - Long defensive Sword, great for charging
Yari - Spear, great against cavalry
Naginata - Pole arm with a sword-like blade at the end, both effective close-quarters and against cavalry
Yumi - Bow, for whittling down the foe before directly engaging
Kisho - Training allowing units to execute their roles with extreme stealth

It arrived!

I can install it to steam from disk so thats great (my sky router is brokened, and my mobile internet is fully used up).

Meh, installed it from disk, and it only installs 77% of it. The remaining 23% is taking forever with 4-5 hours estimated time :(

:( at least yours has arrived, mine either has been hidden by the dog beating me to the post, stolen by the evil post or just hasn't turned up just yet...

For me Medieval 1 was the best of the series as i loved the period. Especially liked the Viking invasion expansion with the huscars.

Shogun is great though i wont be buying the new expansion coming, doesn't float my boat atm. I just want to go back to europe with more space to work with.
