Shogun

I wasn't as impressed with it as some, but it was still a good watch. Nowhere near peak GOT IMO.

I don't think that's a particularly fair comparison. GoTs better moments where often a lot louder then those in Shogun, not too mention that the former has extreme fantasy elements that help prop up the more tense moments. Not to say that they don't share themes of course, but GoTs certainly felt a bit more broad.

I think peak GOT is better than Shogun by some margin, that's just my assessment. Someone compared it to GOT earlier, and that made me ponder on it.

I really enjoyed this remake, much more than the 1980s version. I don't have an issue with them milking it for another 8 seasons and using their creative license to weave multiverse into the story.

IF it follows the actual history of William Adams then I suppose that’s fair. Can’t say I’m keen on the idea though.

Only thing that I was disappointed with was there was no large scale battle.

That's what I was expecting. They would storm the castle and there would be some sort of battle scene.

Still don't think this should be happening because the story has been told.

I get where you're coming from but for me they've played it quite well, it's 10 years after. They can create a whole world that's set in the Shogunate era. And it doesn't have to be compared the original books anymore. They created a great a formula with S1, i personally don't want to see that go to waste because there isn't anything else out there quite like it

A story based (at least loosely) on some real history. There's no end of struggles and historic events from that period to inspire future plot lines and additional characters. For example if the writers want to get edgy, there is the violent eradication of Christianity from Japan.

I loved this show so I am all for it. I don’t have any particular desire to get embedded within historical Japanese accuracy - I’m just looking to be entertained with a good story. Made up or otherwise.

My point isn't that it needs to be 100% accurate, more that there is loads of potential source material to inspire further stories from big historical events beyond those James Clavell used for the Shogun story. So I don't think that the story has to be viewed as finished and can go on beyond the novel if there are good writers with good ideas.

It's not as though we are talking about violating canon and writing new material for a precious fantasy universe where the original author previously brought everything to a neat and final conclusion.
