Yes instantly thought the same , it could easily live or die just on the lead alone ( ala Kingdom of Heaven ) but its excellent so far.

OK, you've convinced me to take a look. I don't generally watch TV shows (no time).

Cosmo Jarvis is excellent in this. I really think he could be brilliant as the next James Bond. Definitely a dark horse contender.

Superb first two episodes I thought. Budget Tom Hardy is good, as is the rest of the cast. Took me a while to work out who Lady Mariko was - she’s one of the annoying brats in Monarch.

I feel he is half Tom hardy, and half Richard burton (voice)
I did not realise that it was going to be all subtitles, which ruins it somewhat for me, I feel constantly having to read takes away from the visual enjoyment

Enjoyed the first two episodes, but yeh, bit short on the action front for me.

Must admit it's not too bad, though it might not please the purists I would prefer if all the dialogue was in English. With two thirds of the on screen time being given to Japanese characters and speakers, gets a bit tedious having to watch the subtitles. Guess that could change later on when Blackthorne/Anjin learns Japanese, otherwise all his dialogue is going to end up subtitled.
Has a bit of a Vikings/Valhalla/Norsemen vibe about it and a bit spiced up from the original TV adaptation, lots of heads being chopped off ("There's only one penalty for crime here - death!") and a few f bombs which I doubt were in the novel which I admit to never actually reading.

I personally think it's good and prefer the way they did this. It preserves authenticity and allows the Japanese actors to express fully in their native tongue without hampering their acting ability or have dodgy dubbing. For the majority of Japanese actors they might not be proficient in English.
On the flip said I know the actress Anna Sawai who plays Lady Mariko had a little criticism that her Japanese sounded funny and wasnt 100% perfect.
I am biased though I dislike dubs and prefer movies and shows in their native language so use to reading subs. You do get use to it.

What a bizarre take.
Shock as TV series set in 1600s Japan, primarily filled with Japanese actors, is mainly Japanese dialogue.
The English parts are in the main actually Portuguese in Shogun world too. Might have been difficult to get Japanese people who can speak Portuguese though.

Just done the first episode. Enjoyed it but the verdict’s out on Poundland Tom Hardy, didn’t really warm to him at all. Hopefully he grows on me.

Brilliant first episode we watched last night. I liked the authentic language used and also thought I was watching a relation to Tom Hardy. I'm looking forward to the 2nd episode today. I'm hooked after the first. Not seen a series of this quality since she hulk. Joking of course. Probably the best thing I've watched in years.
