wow my friends used to oqwn arcades where i used to live and ask what board would be coming in next week

Really enjoyed that thank you for posting.
I played Raptor a long time ago, didn't realise it was so highly regarded just thought it was a solid shooter.

Another shmup (going to start using this term now) I'd reccomend is Beat Hazard.
Its a arena shmup with a twist, you can load any song you have into it and the gameplay reacts to the tempo of the song - use a chilled out song and the game will be easy, use thrash metal and the game will be very challenging.

Scrolling shooters are still big in Japan. They make quite a few of them (mostly the 'Bullet-hell' type now).
If you've got access to a Gamecube, Xbox360 or (preferably) a Dreamcast then try to get hold of a copy of Ikaruga. It's epic:
Failing that, check out the Touhou project games which are available for the PC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touhou_Project#Windows_games - They are incredibly difficult though. Pure bullet-hell.
