Heh, got my own transceiver in the room next door, this is kind of cool though :p

In fact, i could probably start talking, i could tell you the frequency and you could probably hear me. Although i cbb to do that.

sierra papa six echo united america; contest

There's a contest going on and he's calling for people to answer him.

/edit - far too slow!

Stiggeh and Mr. Anderson - callsigns? :)

It's an amateur radio contest where the idea is to talk to as many people as possible over a set time period.

It's variable, different frequencies will perform better/worse depending on the time of day. Personally I've never been into HF so I'm sure someone can give a better indication than me so I'm not even going to try.

calling contest? what does that mean?

You get points for the amount of other people you make contact with. you add up the points for all the contacts you make. You then submit a log (a list off callsigns of people you have spoke with) and win if you have the most points.

Not sure about the foreign ones, but over here in the UK, they swap Locators, which are of the form AA11AA, and that gives you a pretty good idea of where they are.

Many other licensed radio users on here? I did my MI3 beginners license a few years ago but sadly have no gear at the moment. It was all a bit formal for me and I must have been the only local guy my age into it. All a bunch of oldies. Used to work 2m and 70cms bands. No HF.

I contest a lot on VHF and 50MHz and our group is going to start doing some 70cms contests this year as well. We're quite active and we're doing reasonably well. I also run an APRS radio<>internet gateway and have done since early 2000 :)

I got my full license in 2004, was only 14 :p

Haven't really been active for a couple of years now though due to spending most of my time at uni.
