either way it backfired spectacularly for Rishi , his over reaction really propelled this issue. If he didn’t then perhaps no one would turn an eye, he did though and it makes one wonder what was he thinking …
Pretty much this. The empire was awful in many ways but buying hisotrical artifacts for cheap from countries that didn't care is the only reason most of this stuff is considered worth anything to begin with. I'd rather it be cherished in a museum than left to rot in some middle eastern country and inevitably be blown up by the Terrorist group of the week.Something that should be noted is that the reason the marbles are "held in the British Museum despite Greece's protests" (as GB News put it) Is because Greece sold them to us back when they considered them worthless and wanted to court favour. This was the case for the vast majority of the stuff Britain "stole" from other cultures as before around a century ago most of them just considered their historical artifacts to be worthless old junk, hell in the case of Egypt they were actually forcing artifacts on more powerful countries who didn't even want them (this is the reason one of Cleopatra's needles is in a random corner of a park in New York).
IMO if Greece really reeeeeally wants the marbles back then we should be willing to negotiate their price, however that price should reflect their value plus the loss of trade to the museum that would be losing them. Which I think would be a price too large for Greece to consider anyway.

No, people go to the British museum to view the antiquities of the world, not just britain.yes.... people visit the British museum to view British history and artifacts not items that's been pillaged from other countries or is that the type of history that us British people want to show the world?
It's fine when museum borrow or lend artifacts from other parts of the world for a short period of time to allow people who don't/can't travel to see them.
It's not like the Briish museum is making money from them, it's free to go into the museum and it's probably costing us the british tax payer some amounts per year just maintain them while we keep them here.
EDIT: Earl of Elgin purchased them for his private collection from the Ottoman Empire when they was in control of Greece, the only reason why the British museum has them, is because he re-sold them when he was broke.. Even at the time it caused a stir...

You’re wrong , Greek nationalists don’t give a flying bat for the marbles , they want Constantinople back lmao. The average Greek would fancy these marbles back but he has serious problems to think of such as inflation, rising costs etc. there was no mention of the marbles in the news until last week to give you a perspective .Ignoring the blatant dishonesty of a supposed ally would have made him look weak.. the marbles are just red meat for Greek nationalists (and self loathing Brits) much like Argentina bringing up the Falklands and Spain banging on about Gibraltar... the marbles aren't going anywhere.
Good stuff - seems like no reason to change the status quo. You’re wrong , Greek nationalists don’t give a flying bat for the marbles , they want Constantinople back lmao. If it was one of the Terracotta soldiers and China was threatening to block exports of consumer goods to Britain I wonder how you'd react to us giving it back without a second thought, but since it's a weak country it's fine I guess.Good stuff - seems like no reason to change the status quo.

Well they've already pushed over a hundred thousand hongkongers here, what do you think Greece could do with it's migrants? From China perspective that would be like cutting your nose off to spite your face.. but its not surprising that Apple are shifting iPhone production to India from 2025...
