Should Directors film at 16:9

Nope, everything is set to output 16:9. Like I said, some channels are fine and some of my DVDs are fine but the majority are out of proportion and it's the same on every widescreen TV I've ever seen. That's why I put off buying one for so long but now it's too late and I'm stuck watching everything squashed despite what everyone said about it being 'fixed'. It's not fixed at all, you're just getting used to seeing it all out of proportion.

What setting are you using on your TV? Something isn't right somewhere in your setup because everything displays in its perfect aspect ratio for me.

On my TV I have 4:3, 16:9, Smart and Zoom.

16:9 is what it should be set to if you are feeding it a widescreen source. 4:3 is for 4:3 content, whilst Smart and Zoom should really only be used as a last resort as they both crop and lose some image information...

theres wide and then theres 2.35:1

I really don't like 2.35:1, why they feel the need to shoot in that ration, wide screen is 16:9, our screens are 16:9, what's the point in shooting at 2.35:1 :(

Something else to upgrade to in a few years time.

The average cinema screen is not 16:9 its 2.35:1, films are shot to be enjoyed at the cinema and you'll have to put up with the black bars at home.

Films have been shot in 2.40:1 and 2.35:1 since probly the early 30's/40's Waaaaaaaaaaaay before we had 16:9 widescreen TV's...

The question you should ask is why do we have 16:9 TV's, when movies are and have (nearly) always been shot in 2.35:1... its only with the advent of 16:9 TV's that some movies (mainly Kids/Family and the like!!) have been shot in 1.85:1, 1.75:1 and 16:9...

Most BIG BUDGET EPIC movies (Star Wars, Matrix, LOTR etc...) are still shot in 2.35:1 (or 2.40:1 sometimes!) to give you a more enveloping experience in the Cinema... The Screen is still 20 feet high as it is with the 1.85:1 Movie but its now twice as wide!!...

Blimey. I can't believe it took to the bottom of page 2 for someone to say this!

Films are made to be enjoyed at the cinema!

Almost laughable :(

EDIT: Might be of interest. MasterMike, would it not be easier to shoot at 16.9 then crop to 4.3? Or did you not have the capability anyway?

Exactly what I came in to say. As a budding director  I can safely say that films are, 99% of the time, never intended to be shown on a crappy 32 - 50" TV.

Its like saying should directors only shoot with stereo sound? HELL NO! :D
