Should gamers upgrade to Windows 8?

There isn't any real world difference between win7 and win8 for gaming. In fact, some Steam games may not work with win8, depending on how old they are.

There is not real reason to upgrade for just playing games alone.

Don't the upgrade offer end around January time?

So it's not going to hurt too much to hold off a few weeks to wait from more information about how well games perform to come in.

Yep 31st of jan so plenty of time.
But I would advise people to buy it at somepoint before then, even if you don't use it now, the chances are most people will be using it at somepoint in the 3 years until win9 is out.

I upgraded last night.

It's different. But you will find that with any major OS upgrade. It just takes getting used to.

2 main things:

- Drivers: It's going to take time before manufacturers release updated drivers, so could be worth waiting, although nothing major of mine has broken.
- Learning Shortcuts: So much of the UI is made for a touch screen, you are going to need to learn a few windows key shortcuts to make life easier.

If you're worried about things not working, there isn't much to worry about, sooner you get it, the faster you will learn. There is no advantage to it really, so if you are looking for a performance increase, no rush.

I'm in the rather fortunate position of having the keys from OEM vista from both of my Old desktop and laptop so I may look into upgrading them and keeping the retail windows 7 keys I have.

A weird issue for me is bf3 using 59.94Hz in game instead of the 60Hz, I got with windows 7, if that's not an OS issue I don't know what is, it's not game breaking but it ain't right either, also it's not too great with sound drivers, realtek on board seems buggy, even in the playback devices i have 8 digital audio (HDMI) things that are grayed out

I am sure when the drivers mature things will iron, but it's not perfect yet, even installing my mouse drivers brought up that annoying, (this thingy might not have installed correctly), so yes there are some issues in windows 8.

Gamers should hold off in the short term. Why deal with the early issues when you could just wait a few months. It's worth buying now at the discounted price though.

Glad I don't listen to people like you,I'm a gamer and have Win8 Pro on 3 computers with no issues gaming so far, happy I upgraded, all my Steam and Origin games work fine, even XCOM,GW2 and my other titles too, still going through my large gaming list but no issues so far ,Asus Xonar DX is also working great sound wise :).

Right its gaming time off to ME3 MP and GW2 later.

Does it do that just in BF3 or does it say that in Windows nvcp itself?

Have you tried creating a custom resolution forced to 60hz and then running the game again?

I've been using Windows 8 since developer preview across lots of different hardware so I have a better handle on it than most.

YOU might not have had any issues, but that's an extremely narrow view point.

Gamers want to game. Blindly installing a new operating system has the potential to get in the way of that. And for what? The performance is very similar. Certainly imperceivable, and not worth the risk if all you want to do is game.

You might want to consider more carefully whom you choose to listen to. My advice is smart.

I gave up listening to people years ago, remember Vista sucks thread etc... I was one of the first to use it for gaming and beta game testing, guess what?..it gave me many years of gaming pleasure,Windows 8 will be the same, sure drivers will mature with time but that goes for any OS,btw I had other reasons to upgrade to 8 and I still class myself as a serious gamer.

Right off to game in GW2 now :) .

So, in fact, you don't listen to anyone. Fair enough. But you can't call me out on my advice in the context of this thread. Generally speaking gamers should hold off for a while, but buy now while it's cheap. The reasoning is sound and is there for all to see.

For what it's worth, I've literally watched XCOM fail to run on a fresh Windows 8 PC and I know somebody who upgraded over the weekend and lost their sound. So it's by no means perfect for everybody.

In windows it's 60Hz, and in nvidia control panel, just in game is 59.94Hz, been playing for last couple of hours and it seems fine, just weird.

Not tried custom resolution as it seems fine in nvidia you see.

59.94hz is 60hz.

59.94hz is 60hz.

But it used to show 60Hz in windows 7

Sigh, wiki link

References to "60 Hz" and "30 Hz" in this context are shorthand, and always refer to the "slow" 59.94 Hz or 60 x 1000/1001 rate. Only black and white video and certain HDTV prototypes ever ran at true 60.000 Hz. The US HDTV standard supports both true 60 Hz and 59.94 Hz; the latter is almost always used for better compatibility with NTSC.

This bought a genuine smile to my face :)

Just need them to play in the Uk again and I can die a happy man.

Reckon I'll lay off the upgrade for now then. Doesnt seem worth it at the mo. However I do like shiny new things.

All part of the service :D

I'm interested to see how MS proceeds with smart glass. As far as windows 8 goes you really aren't missing much. Best way to describe it is like having the windows phone GUI slapped over windows 7. For people who aren't PC savvy it is easy to navigate, those of us who are used to the start bar will take a little time to adjust

Personally I don't see the need to jump on it, plenty of other people will that have the desire to actually test and find the bugs, I'd rather let those people do the work for me and stick with an OS that I know is both stable and works for the time being.

The UI they've implemented doesn't interest me in the slightest either so no benefit there.

I might get a copy and install it as a VM to have a look around but it won't be my main OS for at least a year, or until I see it has something that will actually benefit me significantly.

It'll be like using an Xbox, but with better hardware and hopefully more features :D.
