It seems that GB is weasling out of having to actually call an election this year (and follow the tradition of a 4 year term rather than a 5 year term) by saying that "it would be wrong to have an election in the current economic climate is there are better things for him to concentrate on".

So the question is, should he call an election this year?

No, only when the Tories have a better leader.

Labour = Good ideas, poor leader, poor cabinet.
Tories = Crap ideas, very, very poor leader.

Don't get me wrong there are things the Tories want to implement which are miles ahead of Labour, but, breaking it all down, we'd be better of with Labour until Dave steps down.

What we need is an Iron Lady type figure that will grip Britain by the scruff of the neck and into the right course. Sound familiar?

Agreed. But quite frankly Labour are doomed anyway (I hope). I don't care if my kids turn out to be gay but if they ever vote labour I will disown them.

Thing is though, I've always supported Blair's ideas up to the Iraq war, foundation hospitals and the crussade against private schools (appart from those I liked most ideas) I find current Labour policy to be lacking.
The Tories and Lib Dems are a mixed bag, they have some decent, and some really silly policies.
I wouldn't mind Clegg as PM, however I do not think that the Lib Dems have a full serious manifesto on how to govern really.

However, while I think that "Dave" is just a worse-copy of Blair, I'd rather have him than GB.

There should have been a general election once Tony stepped down. I don't see very much that is democratic in Gordo's reign. He wasn't even elected ffs.

It is pretty sad how in this country we have been manipulated into not knowing what's going on in the running of our own country for which WE elect our representatives. I can't believe more people aren't outraged and disillusioned by what is happening in our politics: no referendum on Europe (the Lisbon treaty et al) and no general election for a new leader, allowing Gordon through the back door.

So trying to get us out of a giant mess caused by debt, by getting into loads more debt is a good idea?

Our debt, even after all this new spending, will still be less than current French and German levels (we are currently at 40% of GDP, both of them are in the 60s).

Spending is something that is required right now in order to sustain the economy, though a better alternative would be to simply setup a government bank (hang on, we have that already with Northern Rock) and out compete the main banks by offering to lend people money.

Now, I'm not saying that the spend spend culture is good, infact I agree it is not, but just like with a druggy, you slowly take them off, not suddenly.

I know the tories are looking pretty weak, but Labour's lets fix the debt problem with debt is a bad idea.

It's not entirely Labour's fault. It's the banks. They are loosing confidence to start interbank lending. When Labour do something to kickstart the confidence, the banks don't want any of it. We'll always be in this mess no matter what Labour, Tory or anyone else does because the world is in the same situation.

I agree there is no quick fix, Labour are just trying to make it look like they are doing nothing and give the tories the "do nothing party" image again.

Some of the blame has to lie with Brown as he was Chancellor of the Exchequer for 10 years

If the economy doesn’t improve significantly over the next year this Labour Government will be sacrificed as a means to draw a line under the fiasco that's ensued over the past year. It really is irrelevant if it was their fault in the first place, or if they're doing a reasonable job of steering us out of it. They'll be kicked out simply because they've been tainted by "credit crutch", and people want to forget about it and start a fresh. New government, new start. That's the beauty of democracy.

I don't think people, and the government, actually understand what's going on in the economy. Overlending was a massive problem but it is not now; quite the opposite. Now the problem is that people have stopped spending. It doesn't matter how much you try to lend to people they wont spend money on anything but essentials if they think their job is at risk.

In answer to the OP's question Brown will not hold an election until the economy is in better shape, I would like to see him hold an election as the tories have a good chance of winning.

GB must hold an election by May 2010 ?

There is no guarantee the recession will be over and the economy picking up by then and if 3 million are unemployed by that time then it won't look good for him.

I am not particularly pro anyone but I am vociferously anti-Labour.

Yep, but I think he will be hoping its all over my then, or we are through the worst of it and he can take all the credit.

I am also vociferously anti-Labour, and a member of the conservative party, although at the moment they are looking very weak.
