Should I BIOS update?

Hello

I have a GIGABYTE motherboard system.

X570 GAMING X (AM4)

Is it worth checking how to update my BIOS version and what changes from current version?

Never flashed a bios to update before can anyone give instructions.

You just download the file from their website, unzip it, put it on a USB stick. Plug it in, reboot PC, got into the Bios and upgrade...

Have a look here to see whats available, I would also look at the drivers etc

Check which revision of board you have as they're not the same

Why do you want to update it, are you having some sort of issue or planning a CPU upgrade?

Updated UEFI can contain security updates, besides AEGSA, CPU Microcode, CPU SMU FW, CPU IMC FW, other fixes.

I'm aware, but without knowing what platform/setup he's on or why he's wanting to do an update it might not be necessary.

Was thinking as well as updating the bios if it goes wrong it make computer completely unusable, heavy paper weight. lol.

Not that's the BIOS revision, not the motherboard revision Looking at the page there is 1.0 and 1.1 of that board, find out which revision board you have. It'll be a sticker or imprint lettering somewhere.

Double check the board and match it up because a quick search shows no 1001 BIOS revision the history

Yes. Older Gigabytes had dual BIOS feature so even if one gets corrupted it'll switch to the other one, and you can backup and restore. I had one, once the primary BIOS got totally corrupted so I had to restore it.

What bios revision are you currently on exactly?

I'm unsure as to whether the board has some form of bios flashback, which should negate concerns of an update failure. Even without that the chances of a failure are slim, but still possible, unless there's a good reason don't bother.

Platform he's stated. Even if he is not changing CPU, having an issue, would it not be prudent to be on latest UEFI as security updates will be in it. Current latest for that board is F40d dated 02/09/24 and changelog states:-

Update AMD AGESA 1.2.0.Cc for fix Sinkclose Vulnerability of AMD processors (SMM Lock Bypass)

That board has flashback, Gigabyte call it Q-Flash Plus. Page 6 of this manual, unique features pdf from here.

I was generalising in that sense, although I probably should have been more clear.

If that's the latest bios and he's not yet on it then yes, it probably is worth running the update. A lot of bios updates don't necessarily help however, and one or two might even make the computer unusable, although that's an admittedly rare scenario.

If bios flashback is available I'd absolutely just go ahead and do it, you shouldn't be able to brick your board.

There's a lot of performance, and more importantly security revisions between your current bios and the most up to date.

OK but you still have REVISION OF THE MOTHERBOARD.

It'll like 1.0 on the 1.1 on the motherboard itself, I know I've had Gigabytes. once you have revision of that board

That BIOS is from 2019, latest one 2024

Aye, there's a lot that has changed over the lifespan of AM4.

I tend to be a tad wary regarding bios updates without knowing the exacts of why, although frankly I'm the same with most instances of hardware/software considerations in tech as many don't give enough input to really evaluate. I'm loathe to give advice without having a clear view of the picture, part of that is being aware of how often people search the internet for similar concerns/issues only to come across poorly reasoned answers or non-resolution topics/dead ends.

The modern internet has became so low information load and retention in many respects, so I try to flesh things out a bit when possible if only for the sake of whatever poor bugger might find the thread.

In the OP's case I'd update to the latest bios and chipset drivers entirely tbh.
