Hi,

My current rig spec is as follows,

3500x64
1 gig OCUK value
and a x850 Pro PCI-E (550/590)

I was thinking of getting a new gfx card in the £130 - £150 range (will i notice a big difference with something in this price range from what i already have?)

x1800 XT .. yeah I was looking that card. It's a £135 on Overclockers, think I should go for it?

I notice the BFG GeForce 7900 GS OC 256MB is only £10 more but is it a better card?

not a wise question to ask Cyber-Mav as he will start complaining about his failed 7900 and how the whole 7900 series is a failure

i think if you can stretch your budget.. buy the x1900xt 256mb.. ocuk had it at a fab price last week

no need to stretch your budget, lots of good options in your price range. yea the 7900 series is a bit dodgey but i got a full refund for mine including the delivery charges too so its works out be just a loss in time.

Yeah but £45 is quite a jump for a lowly student :D

Is the jump considerable enough from the 1800XT to the 1900XT to be worth the extra £45?

Andy

EDIT: so would you recommend the 7900GS then mav? or should i just go for the 1800xt?

but if he gets a x1900xt we can have another "I've just bought an X1900xt but the clock speed seems to be wrong" thread ;)

if budget stretching is a no.. then i say the 7900gs.. use google and u will be able to find it cheaper... which i think makes the 10 difference negligable

7900gs has all the advantages, low power consumption so without even asking what psu you have i can assume it will work. heat output is low so you don;t need serious case cooling, and noise is far lower than the ati cards.
nvidia drivers are also far superior to ati drivers.

only drawback for the 7900 is its failure rate. if you get one that works and is not busted you will honestly never regret the purchase.

If you can't stretch to the x1900 then go for the x1800 XT, a cracking card, not much slower than the x1900, and its faster than the 7900 GS, the 7900 GS comes in below the 7900 GT, and the x1800 XT is even faster than that. :)

Yeah the price is really nice tbh :)

Although for an extra £15 the extra performance of the 1800xt looks more tempting.

Andy

EDIT: Available This Week Only for just £98.99 +VAT. << 7900 Gs WOW! can i get that up to GT speeds with an aftermarket cooler?

EDIT2: is the 512 version worth it?

I think this is the card for me really, if i fit an aftermarket cooler can i get it to GT speeds?

Andy

to add, if you go for the ocuk card which is a palit card there is no need for an aftermarket cooler since the stock cooler is massive and really good.

the core on the cards clock well hitting over 600mhz on average, mine did 650mhz, but the memory was a bad overclocker for me and the card died due to being a faulty one.

7900gs is really the ideal card for most people but only if you get a working one.

The X1800XT is easily faster than the 7900GS. Plus it seems the reliability of the 7900 series is again in question with the 7900GS cards starting to develop higher than usual failure rates. You can get to X1800XT speeds if you clock the 7900GS, but you can overclock the X1800XT too.

The X1800XT is the smarter choice. :)
