im getting a new pc relatively soon and was wondering if i should snatch a bargain of a 939 and then have to upgrade my mobo for a new cpu in a years time or so. or should i go for an am2 that i can upgrade?
its trickey but here are the choices. i have £100 or so

*get realy cheap single core 4000+ skt 939.
*get realy cheap dual core 3800+ skt 939
*get pretty cheap single core 3800+ skt am2(can you get a 4000+ am2?)
*get not cheap dual core 3800+ skt am2 (i think this will be too expensive still)

wait for conroe :D

You might be able to get an E4200 for £100 but other than that, no chance of a 6 series conroe for £100 (yet) :)

@OP: 4000+ is really a good deal at the moment. But then again, I'd want to jump onto the dual core bandwagon sooner rather than later. I say wait for a cheap X2 3800+ (preferably AM2 as it's more future proof, but socket 939 is just as good)

I am waiting another 3 weeks for conroe to come out and for the am2 price drops. I'll have to compare the prices then to decide which offers better value. Will definitely be getting a dual core processor.

ty for the advice ill deffinatly get an am2 now so i can get a cheap dualcore if i wanna upgrade =) or wait till next gen am2 processors.

EDIT: is there a am2 single core 4000+? if not will there be one?

Can't say I've found any. There is a socket 939 version but on am2, its a dual core x2 4000+.

Nope, there are no AM2 single core CPUs which have 1MB cache i.e. there is no single core 4000+ for AM2.

However, there is an X2 4000+, but AMD is dropping all dual core CPUs with 1MB cache, so the AM2 X2 4000+ has died a premature death.

AMD also need to sort out their CPU naming next time because using the X2 tag is not good enough. 3800+ 4000+ can be confused for single core/dual core.

If you use your PC for Duel Core intensive programs (and that not games) then its a little more complacated but if like me you dont then get an A64 4000 on this weeks special and wait to see what AMD brings out later. this upgrade will cost a little over £100 and means you dont need new Mem/Mobo.
Personally im waiting about a year till the 2nd gen of DX10 cards are out, my 7800gtx and 3700SD are fine for me at the mo and my penis is large enough that i dont have to upgrade every 14 days. ;)

its not an upgrade, its a new pc, i think ill see if i can afford dual core am2, if not ill get a single core am2, i dont wanna be upgrading a 939 mobo in 12 months, this way i just get a new cpu when i need it =)

If it's a NEW PC, then Either go AM2 or save and wait for the Intel.

erm...ill fated? pass on am2? why? whats wrong with it, i dont want to wait a year till i can afford conroe, why not am2?

can someone post me the cheapest conroe system please, i take it conroe uses ddr2? if so then there isnt a change in cost there, can someone help me in costs for these things, im confused with all the conroe numbers n stuff...

cheapest conroe
cheapest conroe mobo (pci-e)

Nothing is wrong with AM2, it's a solid platform and should have some level of upgradability - ie 65nm A64s and possibly some K8L chips.

Conroe sounds very strong, but don't follow the lemmings just yet we don't yet know if there are any cliffs around.

I'd say wait a few weeks for the AM2 and conroe prices to settle and the new prices and see what is available then. I'd say chances are the bang for buck in the price range you are talking about is going to come from AMD. A sub £100 X2 chip will still be a nice prospect.
