should i go am2???

okay thanx for being non conroe biased, woo!! i like your lemmings metaphor, quite relavent with all the conroe followers around, ill wait to see the price drops then make a decision based on price and performance, its more than likely to be am2 like you say, i hope the am2 dual core comes to around £100, fingers crossed =)

Yep, they should be around £100, which is a cracking price considering the whole setup will be able to run am3 chips a year from now!

Although conroe is great, and gives the crown back to intel, there are a huge number of people who I'm sure just suggest conroe cause it's the popular decision atm :p

Isnt it AM2 chips will work in AM3 boards, rather than the other way round?

well, unless the mem controller is changed so it likes mem B/W instead of timings the performance increase isn't going to much at all.

AM2 Cpus will be compatible with AM3 motherboards but not the other way round.

Best bet, Conroe.

Also, how are you going to afford DDR2, a new CPU and mobo on a £100 budget?

There is a cheap Conroe coming, wait two weeks and prices will be lower on all items.

Im waiting until September, issues ironed out, best boards found, and tweaks etc will be posted.

:D

CR.

No, i'm pretty sure its been said that AM3 chips will work on an AM2 board but not the other way around. Thats why AM2 is such a good idea, because you will be able to run a K8L dual/quad core on it when they are released.
If you are gonna have a decent amount of money for an upgrade in 8 months / a year then you may aswell go with conroe because it will be the fastest thing out till then.

In your budget range though a cheap AM2 looks good to me.

Lol AMD are bringing out so many sockets its laughable, I cant see it being a good way to get customers after conroe comes out.

Are the am3 cpus going to have that anti-hyperthreading ability? Because atm games dont take advantage of dual core even after them being out for months just like 64-bit.

Luckily I bought a asrock 939 board so I can upgrade to am2 without buying a new mobo and then use am3 cpus as well, so this mobo will last me years.

how is that?
they have 1 new desktop socket and 1 new server socket.
thats makes 3 sockets if you count 754 or whatever it is called.
AM3 wont be out for probably over a year.

the anti-hyperthreading is currently nonsense rumour spread about the web.. maybe theres something like it in the works but that is unlikely. Most new games engines will take advantage of multi-cores so we will just have to wait for that. I hope they take more advantage of 64bit too.

As far as i know DDR3 has higher bandwidth than DDR2 and so will have a higher max transfer speed.
HT3 supports DDR3... dont think HT2 does... ermm... HT3 will be better than HT2?!?

Theyve brought out 754, 939, am2, am3, within less than 5 years, people are sick of having to upgrade and buy a new mobo and new memory as well as a cpu, not only does it cost more but its more hastle having to put in a whole new mobo and reconnect everything again and have to reformat sometimes because the drivers are incompatible. With intel people dont have this problem and the conroes are faster as well. After all if you have to get ddr memory for a new amd cpu you might as well get conroe instead, and hope that they wont bring out a new socket every year like amd do.

You do know you need a new motherboard for conroe right, even though it's the same socket size? And I didn't know am3 was even out yet, it's just in their roadmap sheduled for next year or so, but supposedly it works perfectly with current am2 systems, And the upgrade to ddr2 was inevitable, amd used ddr for as long as they possibly could really.

With faster processor speed comes a need for more B/W as well, timings are very important but B/W helps as well in the long run. Especially when you consider that they're going to be releasing 4 core cpu's, will probably use not far off double the bandwidth of the current dual core cpu's.

How many sockets have Intel brought out over the last 5 years i wonder. Thats why there is no point in down loading a new bios for an Intel Mobo, by the time its downloaded your mobo has been superceeded.
