Morning all,

I've just got paid today and am thinking about going and getting a touch 8gb. The reason being is i get 10% discount of at the D place, and this means it will cost £150 which is pretty reasonable. I know i could get a 80gb classic for this, but i had a 30gb first gen classic that was simply just storage space, and was virtually never used for video because of its poor battery life. The touch seems cool because 8gb is enough for me, and has lots of cool features that are worth the money.

I have an old 1st gen nano that i will give to my mum or sister that i have been using since.

What is a decent case to get? (no more than £20 though where possible)

I've got one and I think I'd prefer a nano if I didn't want to watch video.

The large screen + video playback makes the touch IMO. Playing music is easier on Apple's non-touch iPods.

Cool,

The one thing that put me off the updated classics was the new browser menu, which can't seem to load up a lot of album art fast enough. I looked at the nano also which has the same browser and didn't particularly like what they had done to it.

What kind of customising can i do with the touch, or is it only the iphones that you can do stuff to (wallpapers etc).

Thanks.

iPod Touch can be customized and you can install tons of games and that on it, but it will need to be Jailbroken. If the Touch has 1.1.2 firmware on it then it can easily be done, but if it has the newer 1.1.3 firmware then you cannot currently Jailbreak it.

Anyway, go and buy it! :)

GET THE TOUCH!!

Got an 8gig for Christmas and I use it constantly. Fantastic piece of hardware - video playback, internet, music are all great. Also, the screen is so responsive.

Also, I think you get the new software (mail, maps, weather, stocks, and notes) for free if you buy it now.

I never tought I would say this about an apple product, but the touch is the nicest player ive ever used. Lovely menu system and very simple to use.

Definately worth its price tag.

Yup, I think they're amazing, so much better than any of the competition, and the price is fantastic for what you get. The ultimate in convergence.. checking e-mails in the living room is now quicker than my EEE, smaller and more convenient when out and about near a hotspot!

If 8/16GB is enough, then its a brilliant gadget. My only "regret" is I didn't realise how great the videos looked on it, and suddenly 8GB felt a bit tight.

Not really a problem though it just means rotating the files on it. Its a great mp3/video player - the wifi/email/googlemaps/calendar etc. are the icing on the cake. And thats without Jailbreaking it.

Do videos need to be converted from one format to an apple format like with the first 5th gens? If so, does videora still work well?

Also, can i access my hotmail (email) easily if i am in a wi-fi?

The D website says that the price is slightly cheaper as you dont get the newer apps with this model, so does that mean it will be the 1.1.2 firmware which is able to be jailbroken?

Yes and yes, providing you mean via the website?

Yeah, via the msn web address. :)

Going out early tomorrow to get it. Still unsure as to whether to JB it at first, or get used to using it first. I've been reading guides for the past 30 mins and it seems very easy to do. Will be reading through your sticky. :)

Use it for a couple of days to make sure everything works ok then when you get a little bored JB it :)

About Hotmail... yes, in theory. I often have trouble accessing my Hotmail in Safari and have done for a long time. I always have to fire up Firefox to access my inbox.

It seems to be a Safari thing because I've had the trouble on multiple Macs/user accounts and recently on the Touch.

Exactly the same thoughts and regret as me.. wish i had a 16GBer..

Dunno if you've got one yet but I'd say get an Archos 605 wifi, tis a little chunkier but has a nicer higher res screen and has some very cool functions.
that be it

my housemate has a touch and we both agree that the archos is nicer.

That Archos is probably worth a look, as with a lot of other alternatives. A lot of people on here though will set out with "iPod blinkers" on and only really consider something from Apple. I do it myself.

The problem is, you can buy something technically superior, but you always seem to be left missing the x-factor. I suppose it might come down to the iPod being part fashion-accessory.
