Should i go out and get a touch today?

Seen a guy with one of these last week, and whilst they look nice, IMO they are too big and chunky to use as a daily carry around player, and they look very delicate for taking to the gym etc.

Indeed, weird cartoon thing he was watching... In terms of looks there is no comparison, the touch is leaps and bounds ahead of the Archos IMO and is a lot more friendly in terms of size for it to be used as a true portable player the Archos looks akin to Red Dwarf technology.

That said, both of them are amazing products so either player you are getting is bound to give you hours of enjoyment.

Sorry for the hijack, but I have a question for anyone that's used the maps app much.

Say I were to go online at home, and plot a route from my house to the destination. Is there any way of saving this route on the touch so that I can access it while in the car?

I'm going to plump for the 16Gb model soon, but this would really tip me over the edge :)

Well, its more a lack of the touch refreshing I think, but your previous route is remembered IIRC, adn as long as you plan the route before going out I think it remembers the details, even if you dont have an internet connection.

I'm in the market for a Mac in the near future but and I'm considering getting a new iPod too (currently have a 30GB 5G and love it).

I'm torn between an 80GB Classic and a 16GB Touch.

99% of the time I use my iPod for listening to music in the car. I only use videos occasionally but I like the option of having them available. My mp3 collection isn't huge (about 6GB) and I love having episodes of Bottom, Young Ones, Spaced available for motorway trips etc (Note: I don't actually "watch" them when driving, just have them on in the background :)). So a Classic would be ideal for my needs?

But...

The gadget and wow factor of the Touch keeps tempting me! I keep thinking "Nah, the classic's the perfect option" but the 9-year old toy-lover in me keeps whispering sweet nothings about the Touch in my ear! :p

Yup, just do a bit of scrolling and it'll cache the pretty pictures too. :)

No contest, get a touch. You don't have much in the way of music and videos? They look awesome on the touch and it's a lovely bit of kit.

The touch is a nice player but still lacks a ton of features. Audio on it is crap compared to others like Archos or the Zen Vision:M. Check out any decent review and you'll see a lot of talk about the flat audio on it. On my Super.Fi 5 Pro headphones you can easily tell the difference between my Vision:M and my 16GB Touch. No radio or customisable EQ is still a letdown, especially the latter, which I hugely miss.

The only thing that makes the Touch truly a top bit of engineering is the UI, which can't be faulted in any area...apart from the crap keyboard.

Hmm, that's definately made me think a little bit. Was interested in the 16GB touch but if the audio is bad I think I may give it a miss. I really like the UI and its features but given that I will be listening to music on it for the most part... may have to go for the Classic instead.

Go to a store that has demo units and have a gander. I find the sound fine using the non default earphones.

thx

however I've noticed that u can't use the device as external hard drive, as nothing appears in my computer. all my old iPods could do this:o

Strange, as I'd say the keyboard is one of the main things I like about the touch/iphone. Once you learn where to press it's really easy to use.

The UI is what puts me off as far as being a true mobile music player is concerned. If you're riding a bike or something it's a bit of a pain to have to need to look at a screen to navigate through your MP3 collection. With previous MP3 players I've owned they have had navigation buttons you can easily use while leaving the device in your pocket. The touch requires you to look at the screen to do anything really.

Very true, and this was one of my main concerns too especially since the touch hasn't a volume wheel like the iPhone. I take the bus to work and constantly have to either switch from music to podcasts, or adjust the volume during the journey. It does get a tad annoying in that aspect.

I'd do some research and check out decent reviews of the device's audio side. I am an acoustics engineer so I am fussy about these things. For example I rate iRivers (old school players) as having the best audio followed by Creative. Getting my Touch when it was released in USA was a bit of a step down for me in the audio department.

Some people need to look beyond the looks of the device. Yes it is nice and all that, but there is a lot that the player could have benefited from.

Easy to say, but you admit you bought one any way? I'm a bit of a sucker for ipods, there are better players with better sound quality but I like the Apple products and the direction Apple as a company is going (I even don't mind iTunes and use it solely). I'd rather wait until the 3rd generation touch though :D. Fingers crossed that will have improved sound, battery, features and capacity :D.

Yeah, I bought one because Creative failed to deliver a decent successor to the better Vision:M. That hurt a lot of Zen fans, especially as the new Zen isn't as good as the Vision:M when it comes to playing back Xvids. I almost went with Archos because their players were much superior, but the addons were pricey.

Fair enough, I didn't mean to sound like I was having a go. I just wondered your reasoning for buying one. Cheers.
