Should I install the DirectX 9.0c update in Vista x64?

Hi all,

I have recently upgraded to vista x64 and overall I am extremely impressed with the OS. However I just tried to install 3Dmark 2006 and was prompted to install the Directx9.0c update. I chose not to and the installation continued. When I try to run 3Dmark i get a "d3dx9_28.dll not found" message.

My question is, should I install the 9.0c update? I was under the impression that this shouldn't be done in Vista as it is DX10 native with a directx9 wrapper of sorts. I would just try it myself but I know from experience how hard it can be to pull an unwanted version of DirectX out of an install. :p

Any ideas guys?

DirectX 9.0c working ok in my vista ultimate

Thanks mate, I guess i'll go ahead and install it then. It seems a bit strange to me though that we need to install what is essentially an older version of DirectX. I'm sure I am just misunderstanding something. :(

Doesn't vista have Directx9L??

My point exactly... Can anyone clear this up for us?

But anyway I installed the DirectX9.0c update and 3DMark 2006 ran perfectly. I got a score of 10914.

Anyone know if that sounds about right? My machine is as follows:

Core 2 Duo @ 3.33
2GB DDR2
8800GTX (Not overclocked)
Asus P5W DH-Deluxe

Etc... etc...

Sounds the same as mine, mine scored 11k just. My system is almost identical to yours. I have the same mobo, 2gb ram and same video card also Vista 64.

I thought Vista had DX10?

Aye indeed it does mate. It all seems a bit odd to me. Perhaps NathanE or someone else with some extensive Vista knowledge could shed some light on this?

It does, but it needs Dx9 as well otherwise you cant play any games at all on it as theres no Dx10 games out yet. :p

Spot on. You're just installing an update for Dx9, which it still supports, otherwise you'd have to throw away all your games. :)

Ahhh, so we are saying Dx10 and Dx9 are completely seperate entities? Seems to make sense.

In the past obviously you would just have for instance DirectX 8.0 installed and that would play all Dx 5, 6, 7 and 8 games. I guess things have changed this time around then. :)

This DX update supports both 32 & 64 Vista, although Vista says DX10 underneath the skirt it does have DX9, so no harm with the download, in fact FSX funs a little bit better here with this.

Vista has DX10 and a DX9 wrapper/compatibility layer.

I suspect the install program for 3dMark is using a non-standard way to check the DirectX version and thus is producing that wierd error message because the developers didn't expect it to be running on Vista. As always, the vast majority of compatibility problems are caused by the install program being overly sensitive

I had forgotten to install this and have been playing games fine , Steam DOD Source.
Thanks for the reminder ;)
