should i sell my 60gb PS3 now while the goings good?

I have never mentioned cars as Its a rubbish analogy.:p

I don't own a PS3 either.

I posted in the cinema section about getting a BR player and everyone said get a PS3 as its more than a BR player and console.

Well after looking into why would I want a PS3?

I don't see any benefits in owning one.
So why come in here spouting off about how it's not as good as a HTPC? Of course it isn't... but it does a heap of stuff more than the 360 does and costs more because of this. I agree it's still too expensive this far into it's lifespan and I think Sony need to drop the price soon to stay in the race, but to compare it against a PC is just ridiculous imo.

There are loads of points you have made which really pointless and just arguing for arguings sake, i.e. 500GB isn't big enough - well luckily you can upgrade the HDD very easily so when bigger 2.5" drives come out then stick a bigger one in or even use a 3.5" drive if you know how. Can't rip DVD's directly to the HDD - it's not a bloody PC... although most People have PC's so it isn't difficult to rip them using that and transfer them over.

You are slagging off the PS3 purely because it doesn't do what YOU want it to do. Take a good look at the last gen of consoles and then a good look at the competition and you will realise that games consoles have come a long way and that, whilst it might still be too pricey, the PS3 is the most feature rich console there has ever been.

I'm not saying the PS3 is not feature rich.

What I am saying its not worth 300.

I was all intent of having a PS3 as the centre of my Home cinema hooked up to my PC to stream MY media.

I'm so dissapointed that the PS3 is anothing more than any other console.

Just annoys me that people always seem to justify the high price.

An xbox will be going in my Home cinema now to play the odd driving game on my 92" screen and I will use this as a media extender to my HTPC.

I'll put the money saved into some 1.5TB drives for it :p

Ok, so simply put...

Is the PS3 expensive? YES

Should the price be sub £200 at this point in it's lifespan? IMO YES

Are a lot of the people who use it as their media player very happy with what it does out of the box? YES

Does the PS3 do what YOU specifically want it to do for your home cinema? NO

Seems like a bit of a pointless arguement to me and more like you just having a bit of a rant because it doesn't do what you hoped it would before researching!!!

:p

Lets see what the figures are for the consoles sold at xmas, Sony may of missed the boat with not dropping the price.

Who wants a cheaper PS3 in Spring when we are in a full blown recession.

I just dont see how the PS3 is not worth the price when you cant get a blu-ray player and a console with the same options cheaper!!!!

Well if your post made sense I wouldnt feel the need to say something.

Eh?

Whats with the attack?

Its a console FFS stop being so righteous.

Everyone else has understood so I fail to see why you haven't TBH.

It was talked about early on how the BR players dropping in price has had a significant impact on the reasoning behind buying a PS3 now at its inflated price.

Each to their own and all that :D

I wanna get the ps3 as a games console and br player If only the price was near £200 :(. When's this planned pricedrop going to take effect?

IMO the ps3 is the most futureproof br player available :)

Errr..... I don't want a blu ray player.... DVD's are fine

Not everyone want to marvel at HD.... some just want to watch films and play a few games

I'm also seriously considering selling my PS3 soon. I bought the thing over a year ago. Since then I've bought MGS4 (good movie) and little big planet (great if you can put the hours in to make levels. Single player is just to loose)

Bluray players are now far surpassing the ps3 qualty wise and games are thin on the ground. It's sound output is still crippled years down the line.

Sorry rant over. I'm just peeved that £279 lighter and 12 months later I can't think of a positive for my dusty old ps3

It's your choice whether you buy games for it, don't blame the console. Also how is it common knowledge that at present it's still regarded as one of the best blu-ray players?

So as it stands your not only getting an excellent console but also a top tier blu-ray player.

Genuine question: Is the 360 better in the role of media extender than the PS3 is, for your requirements? Is that as a result of being able to use Media Centre with it? Only reason I ask is that, last time I had access to a 360, Media Centre was quite limited in files it would play, and the entire interface was quite laggy (perhaps due to my PC being connected wirelessly, but still not acceptable).

It does seem that you want HTPC features at a far lower price. yes, people do say that the PS3 is good for streaming media, but if they're actually saying that it's an appropriate substitute for a proper, dedicated media extender or HTPC, they're sorely mistaken. For the average user though, it's an extremely handy feature to have; I use my PS3 all the time to stream music or movies from my PC, yet I doubt I'd ever consider buying a dedicated device to do so.

I wouldn't sell my 60Gb to buy a new PS3 have you seen them side by side the 60gb makes the newer models looks like cheap tat. Sprayed on silver on the front and the Sprayed silver stencilled Playstation 3 logo on the side. It looks cheap and nasty compared to the old 60gb PS3s.

can you stream MKVs or move MKVs to the PS3 HDD and play of there?

You need to remux them first. You can download mkv2vob free from t'internet then us it to con vert mkv files to vob files which the PS3 will play fine.

It doesn't take long to remux each file either as it doesn't actually change much on the original file.

i'll agree the 360 has better social aspect but both do online gaming except the PS3 does it for free and indeed with Home it will easily equal the 360 social aspects... will be interesting to see what argument is used then...

Home is nice if you like to just chat in a virtual world and enjoy queing for pool or bowling ;), But the problem for me with Home is that its a seperate app you have to load and is entirely seperate from any other game you want to then load.

Xbox Party chat uses minimal resources and runs in the background of any game you are playing, so you can chat to your mates whether your playing the same game, different games or on the dashboard, without any interuption.

Just a few issues doing this
1. It only works for 60% of my titles properly (Either bad video/audio/no forced subtitles)
2. Subtitles don't work at all which sucks when you need the forced subtitles
3. DTS is 'converted' to AC3, and is noticeably poorer when listened to back to back. The same goes for any other more 'hi-def' audio formats, DD+/DTS MA etc.

I do have an extensive collection of HD stuff, and as I said, about 60% of the films can be reasonably straightforwardly converted to play on my PS3 (and 360), but in the end I had to transcode a few, whether video or audio, and the quality always suffers a bit, sometimes it's very obvious.

For casual use, I think you'd easily get away with it, but if you want 95%+ of everything to work without major recoding, then the consoles are not for you..
