Should I split the bills by proportion?

All of our money goes into one account : our account. If I need to buy some PC or car bits or, well actually anything, or she wants to buy a load of clothes or, well actually anything, then that's what we do. We buy it.

Having separate accounts as a married couple is alien to me. YMMV.

My partner and I just have our wages go into a joint account, there is no my money and her money, I couldn't stand living that way. Constantly adding up who paid what and then if we ant to go out can we both afford it.

I couldnt handle that way of money management. I'd hate to have to ask if it was ok to buy myself something out of the money pot.

I pay the mortgage and my wife pays the bills. We both have our own money and the only joint accounts we have is for the mortgage and savings.

That way she can buy a £xxx handbag and I can buy a £xxxxx watch and theres no asking if its ok and theres no guilt.

Me and the wife have our own account (into which our wages go) and we pay our own mobile and car insurance bills.

The rest goes into the joint account for kiddos child minder, bills, food etc

That way we can buy secret presents for each other by holding back a bit from the joint account transfer.

My wife pays a proportion of the bills because she earns less than me. However we did talk to each other about this before the agreement went in place and discuss any changes.

You know? How a relationship should work...

I earn about 50% more that my husband does, although he pays for everything ... before everyone yells at me, we can survive on his wages comfortably which means mine go into savings, pays for the big things etc.

We do 50/50. We have a joint account and we both transfer over the same amount of money each month and then the mortgage, council tax, bills, food etc all come out of that account.

This is despite the fact she earns £43k per annum more than me (although she tends to pay for the holidays each year)

hahaha, thats a good way to keep him undercontrol. Pennyless whilst you live the high life

(im joking BTW) or am i:eek:

I guess its entierly up to you and your girlfriend. Personally, I'd like to try and keep it 50/50. In marriage, I'd be more inclined to split proportionally.

In marriage why would you split it at all.

Surely the finances are jointly yours whoever earns what?

We have several married friends who keep their shares separate and it seems to be the primary cause of tension within the marriage.

My wife and I have one income, ours.

Because some people like to have the privacy of their own account and income. I know I would never be comfortable having a fully joint account and it would cause more tension. Horses for courses and all that.

We just have joint accounts, money all goes into 1 pot so no need to go 50/50.

Works well...apart from at the moment I have no spare cash to buy myself a new projector or pc as everything is getting spent on the house.

Once things settle down shouldn't be a problem :)

I find my friends very bizaare that one will complain they can't do something or buy something and the other being able to buy things due to them having single accounts...I find this is how arguements can happen!

Exactly. It is part of being married. I have never understood this separation of finances in a marriage, it implies a separation in the marriage which kind of defeats the point.

I would say the opposite. We have our own accounts and put in money and a bit more into our joint account for the mortgage and bills. We never argue about money and I'm not moaned at if I buy something large like a new mobile, tablet or whatever because it's out of my own account. Other friends of ours with joint accounts are always arguing because the woman has bought an expensive pair of shoes or the guy some car bits. Also if I'm buying a present for the other half why would I want her to know how much it cost?

I really don't see the need for one big 'pot', unless you are seriously on the breadline and have no spare money at the end of the month.

Marriage is about openness and trust, why would you need to keep your finances private from your wife?

Why would it cause tension?

So it's some kind of status/trust/insecurity issue then? I really don't see any practical reason for having one account for both of you and one account only.
