Should Mac and Linux be split?

Indeed, ship out the Mac users with their overpriced white shiny pretty machines, one-button mice and pointy-clicky drag-and-droppy it-just-works-y-ness.
And while you're at it, get rid of the Linux newbies posting banal questions like "which version of linux is best for playing WoW"/ "OMGZLOLZLINUXHASHAXEDMYWINDOZEPARTITION"/"why doesn't my non-brand-name made in Estonia wireless card work out the box"

Oh wait....then I'd be here on my own..hmmm..I was joking, honest! guys? GUYS?!?

p.s. all the above is said in a rather tongue-in-cheek manner due to massive boredom on my part

Absolutely - give us our own place, now! :p
Agreed, with the advent of the Intel Macs I think we shall see a bigger up take of people who have come over from the dark side to see the light of the Mac world. I don't want to hang around with those grubby, bearded, fat linux geeks anymore. ;)

*doh! Realises I am writing this with Ubuntu* :p

It looks like it's going to be no, for now at least. If there does prove to be a significant uptake of Macs around here, then that might be worth looking at again.

In the meantime, I'm open to consideration of any suggestions (within reason) that would make this place more inviting to Mac users. We do have room for another sticky, so if someone wants to spend the time, I'll gladly stick it.

PS - I'm in both camps - running Linux servers both at home and in datacentres, and I own a shiny new Mac Mini. However, I'm a Mac n00b, so I'd best not be writing any stickies. :)

We could do with a list of all the essential apps, there's plenty of existing threads which can be edited together.

A long explanation of all the methods of running Windows on Intel/PPC.

Information on education discounts

Anymore suggestions?

I can start on the Windows guide :)

Well it seems you're stoked about Win-on-Mac so that's all you. What sections should be covered? Some tentative ideas:
  1. Switching from Windows to OS X. (Where to find commonly used tools, adapting your methods, etc.)
  2. Mac hardware, differences between it and most personal computers
  3. On Intel Macs (Rosetta, this could be a subset of the previous topic)
  4. Useful OS X programs.
  5. Little-known features of the OS, hints, tips, tricks, hacks, workarounds (I'm not quite sure what to put here. Perhaps some UNIX command-line skullduggery)

Anybody want to add to the list? Is there anything that anybody wants to write about or has some topic in mind on which you are experienced and would like to help a writer?

I dont think there are enough posts to warrant a split imo and most of them are labelled adequately to allow them to easily be distinguished between Mac and Linux.

These forums:
http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/index.php?
have a feature where you have to state (tickbox) which subject you are posting in a forum, e.g. in the iMac and Mac Mini forum you have to state which one your post is about so the title is easily labelled. Considering its the same vBulletin could OcUK not turn on the same feature??

I will gladly work on a sticky with someone in a joint effort..

I'd be willing to do the essential applications part, if someone would do the intel mac section (explaining boot camp) and maybe another do summit bout education discount and I will shove them all together and format it all pretty :D

P.s If Im bored / no one wants to I might do it myself

Ok just got the email dude

Working on the essential applications now..

Anyone care to do the education discount? (perferrably someone with access to the HE store)

That sounds like a forum mod. Not something we'll entertain here (they introduce extra avenues for security issues, and up to vBulletin 3.5, they're officially unsupported).
