Should Mac and Linux be split?

Ok Mat,

Just a rough explanation detailing the sort of discount you'd get at the different levels, what you need to qualify, the different ways to access the discount (i.e. the NUS website, a link perhaps?) and just generally things for a first-timer so it's clear how they can save money :D

How about we start a thread for Mac hardware / OS X photos and screenshots? :) It's always good to see everyone elses setup, and it would probably be good to have a seperate one for Mac's rather than the general one's that are in the other forums.

Berserker, if the forums won't be split at the moment, would it be possible to change the forum title? I'm not sure what to yet, but it at least needs, Apple or Mac in there somewhere so the less well informed people know what's here :)

Well if you look back to you previous post maybe you could do #5?

Unless you fancy something else.. so far, I've got a complete list of essential apps, and some kind stuff from punky_munky about boot camp so it's up to you :)
Ugh, how did I miss this? Sorry about that, old chap. I've get on it when I get off of work. :)

I think I'll also do a piece on switching from Windows to OS X as I mentioned earlier.

To which email address do you want me to send what Ive got? :)

Why doesn't someone make a thread for discussing the sticky? Where everyone posts what they've written so others can comment and modify it?

The first post can be used for the full sticky text, and edited when new content is submitted or changed.

That seems better than emailing each other, as then everyone has their input :)

Sounds good to me. Heres a bit about student discounts etc.

Feel free to chop and change.

Staff
You should be able to access the online education stores from within your institution.

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/uk/Images/routingpage.html

You can also get the education discount from the Apple retail shops (Regent Street - London, Blue Water shopping centre - London, Bullring shopping centre - Birmingham, Brent Cross - London, Trafford Centre - Manchester, Meadowhall shopping centre - Sheffield). You will need to take proof of study or employment, for example an NUS card or staff card.

Please note that for security reasons, access to the dedicated Apple Store can only be gained from within your institution’s network or from another recognised IP address. Generally, this means you will not be able to access it from your home computer.

If you are a student or teacher wishing to make a personal purchase, you can call 0800 039 1010. Alternatively, send a fax to 0800 912 7760 or email [email protected].

The retail stores will also do product price matching if you can find the same product cheaper at another store.

How about...

Did this split ever get decided on? Eleven out of the twelve latest posts were Mac-related when I just logged on:

.. I'm all for the split, lest I have to counter the "Ooh look at my lovey white Mac" posts with a "look at my nice, beige Linux box" post.. actually, there hasn't been a "show us your linux box" thread for ages.. hmm..

I thought it was a bit unfair having a dedicated stickied Mac only hardware & screenshot thread (I would rather it was a joint Mac & Linux, BSD etc thread). If the Mac people really do want a split then go for it, even on a temporary basis (after all we had a forum for Half-Life 2 didn't we?).

If we don't split, and if someone hasn't already started it, I would like to suggest a Mac and Linux gallery please ... or else someone just start a show us your Linux box & screenshot thread (once I get access to a camera I'll post a piccy of my penguin box :)).

Glad to see the Mac Sticky is going ahead ... and well by the looks of it
If you need any typing/editing done or another article written drop me an email :)

I've already said it in this thread by I'd much prefer if the subjects were split into different forums. I'm a big Apple fan and mac user but the Linux/BSD etc. threads just don't interest me in the slightest ... yes I know people can say Linux & OS X aren't that different, but in more ways than one there a completey different from each other, and I'm sure other people must think the same.

With more and more people "switching" over to a mac its going to be easier in the long term anyway if all the main operating systems are in seperate forums anyway.

If you have anything for the sticky, just post it in here :) Others can then comment and change things, and we might end up with something worth putting up :D

We should have these split now. It's quite obvious that the Mac threads are taking over this forum at the moment, and i'm sure the Linux people would rather they had their own forum too.

I'm not sure what elses needs done for it?

I could always do a small Mac Buying Guide maybe?, providing some info on each and pointing out the advanages of and disadvantages?

If your wanting any articles wrote in particular I'll gladly help out anything :)

I think that Macs and Linux should have its seperate forums as this forum started as a Linux forum and Macs were added later. These days most the posts are Mac related. I just logged on and all the new posts are Macs.

I have nothing against Macs but it can get a little confusing for new users who log in to the forum trying to work out what posts are Macs and what posts are Linux. Lets make it easier for everyone and split the forums.

Gordy..

Please, quit with this discussion. The answer has been given and it's not changing. I realise some people will find that less than ideal, but there just aren't enough people around here to justify two forums.

I'd recommend building the new sticky in a new thread, as I'd like to close this one down at some point.
