Should OCUK forums go subscription only?

Refreshing to see so many people that think that being a moron has to do with how much money you have......

I would pay towards a vote system for getting rid of people like the OP. If people post something worthy of an infraction then their name gets put up for votekick. They must reach a decided number of votes before they are banned and you pay to vote :D

I pay for a premium membership with Reptile Forums, but that gives a few benefits. You do not have to pay, the free access is pretty much the same, you can post as normal etc.

However OP, no. Just no.

Lol,No thanks...who would pay to use a forum?

We already pay for our internet connections,so we should start paying extra to visit certian websites/fourms now too? :X

we provide the forums free of charge.

it is free because it adds value to the prospect of shopping with us and allows customers to become educated on their purchases without having to tie up a salesman for trivial issues.

This. I'm relatively new to OcUK as a proper user, I think I actually came on originally to warn of a member who is/was a prolific liar and has ripped many people off across a number of forums. (This post if you're interested)

I stuck around and had a nosey, asked a few questions, got some good advice and made my first OcUK purchase, largely based on that advice.

Had I clicked "Register" and it had asked me for £4.99/month I'd have simply closed the tab and forgotten all about it.

It's a funny idea, we could end up like saints web which has about 9 people that troll each other (decending into horrible personal attacks) who all pay the fiver a year sub, then everyone else picks about with 3 free posts a day for useful information.

Dear lord...

Perfect example of how NOT to run a forum. Why am I not suprised it's football related.... :/

(not to mention the horrible eye-seering red theme).

Isn't SomethingAwful paid for? I haven't looked there for years, but I'm sure my brother used to post on there and when I looked you had to pay.

I actually know a forum which put a subscription fee on it for posting.

Needless to say, it didn't last long.

It's very common these days for forums to charge for access to a "VIP" usergroup, which has extra features, such as custom title/avatar/access to hidden forums etc.

But it just isn't realistically worth it for the reasons I mentioned previously. It comes at a massive cost to the entire community just so the owner can get a few quid. :/

I think the ocuk forums should go subscription only, say access for 30 days for £4.99.

Think of the business generated by the forum, I went from a mostly off the shelf buyer to a builder in 2001 because of what I read in these very forums.

Think of the time saved by the shop support staff because customers get help with issues from the forum community and mostly pin down and remedy issues without tying up technical staff.

The forum pays for itself in a lot of ways, any charge would be an insult to loyal and knowledgeable customers.

OCUK would never do this, they know the value of the community to the business.

The mods are here to stomp down on the idiots and there are some who although idiocy seems to flow from them it is harmless and quite entertaining at times.

Oxy dose not suit you as a name for this post; Oxy suggests 'spot', which following this could be suggestive as 'spot on', this time however is not the case.

You can view a word-filtered version of it for free but to become a member and be able to post requires a one-off US$10 payment. However, the forum content - both in width and depth - is considerably greater than many forums (including this one) so it can be worth it. It's also one of the biggest sites on the internet which does put paid somewhat to all those saying that this model doesn't work.
