I think you are OK with Mac stuff as long as you are aware of the update cycles. I got my 2011 MBP as soon as the sandy bridge versions came out and it kicks ass. My brother in law who knows I am into macs last summer just went out and bought a 21.5" imac a week before the new ones. He spent a £1000 and in less than a year its 2 generations out of date. That is where you get stung.
Just seen a PowerMac G5 up there, I bought one September last year (Dual G5) and had some real good fun with it. Unfortunately I needed space and had to sell it, but I gotta be honest what a laugh it was!
