It's still very young at 8 weeks. You didn't make the mistake of keeping going to it when it cried, did you? They learn almost immediately crying brings someone to them, which is not what you want for a harmonious coexistence :) It's a nice looking pup, I am looking forward to hearing how you get on. Good luck.

That's about the best mine will do as well..

He won't go deep enough to get his belly wet!

My mother's springer loved the water whenever they took him for a walk on the beach he would gallop straight down to the water and literally jump into it and go for a swim and in all weathers it was the same with rivers, straight in and not just a paddle he would go right out used to have to try and call him back before he got washed away, funny isn't it

Can't a see a general pet advice thread so I have a question.

Is the range of peanut butter that is sold in Lidl, Aldi, safe for dogs, as in, its doesn't contain xylitol. If anyone has any around could you check. I can't pop out to check at the moment. I did a quick google and some brands that contained it were listed but it wasn't an exhaustive list.

Well it's the xylitol that poisons dogs, so if there's definitely none at all in it your dog should be OK, but I have to ask, why risk it? Peanut butter isn't really a normal diet for a dog :)

For anyone that doesn't know, peanuts (and possibly other nut, I am not sure), contain xylitol, which is very poisonous to dogs, never give them peanuts or things like artificially sweetened drinks or foods with xylitol sweetener in them.

well there's no risk if it doesn't contain xylitol. It's perfectly safe. PB is a widely used treat, vets use it to keep them occupied whilst clipping claws and other reasons. Its good to smear inside a Kong thing to keep them happily entertained for ages. Ideal for when I am getting the kids ready or for a treat when he's crated on the school runs.

Anyhoo, 2 days in and he's happily settled down. Little accidents still but we are now getting used to his own little signs when he needs to go to toilet. Still a bit of a mess in the morning in his crate but he seems to settle better after the first night which is expected. It's really nice to have a dog around the house (read: living room only for now), the noise, smell, cuddles. It was all missed for over a year.

oh no, we let it cry. this is the way. Last night and the night before I noticed, 2 hours after we went to bed he cried, then around 6am he cried again, so hes going 5-6 hours after his first cry. Tonight I will make sure he goes out as late as possible, to be fair its been ******* it down the last 2 nights and he was like a penguin out side in the garden, coming over to us and sitting on our feet. Didn't like the rain lol.

WOW what a handsome hound.

Surprised about the crate thing? I was always lead to believe that was their safe space and wouldn't mess it and so it was with barkley..

Great looking dog though, I love barkley to bits but every time I get served up a picture of him all smol by google it makes me want another puppy lol.

yeah it is a safe place but it takes a little time them getting used to holding in wee and poo over night. he didn't make as much mess last nigth as the first two. Fingers crossed he will make less tonight. See how it all goes. Louis, my passed lab took about a week, maybe nearly 2 before he was clean in the morning. Then about a month after before he could 100% tell us needed to go outside. My memories a little faded as it was 12 years ago.

I don't think I have even had any peanut butter myself, must try it!

I just had it stuck in my head that I shouldn't let him wind up in the situation where he could mess his crate as it would disturb him etc...

Still, my first dog so I read all the internet and most likely got a load of it wrong.

I mean he can't walk on a lead for **** lol
