2.5" drives are a different matter as they sometimes have propitiatory connection methods for the sata/usb bridge, sometimes with it being hard soldered to the drive circuit board

yeah sorry, i wasn't very clear. WD have a habit of not only using this oddity that requires the pins blanking, but also some sort of encryption that renders the drives unreadable outside of the original enclosure, even other enclosures of the same type can't read them apparently! it's the single reason i'll be binning off my WD Mybook as soon as I can find a suitably priced ICYBOX or Sabrent 5+ drive enclosure
