Shutter Island

Watched this last night and quite enjoyed it, though I thought the story line was quite predictable. I did wonder just how many guards do you need to look after 60 odd "patients"? :p

Also was I the only one that thought "Dont worry you are not on the Titanic" in the opening scene's? :p

SPOILERS.....

Saw this last night and thought I'd portray my utter dissapointment.

Didnt really appreciate the total feeling of not knowing what was happening for the first half of the film, by the time the plot quickened I wasn't interested enough to care.

The dream sequences had no point of reference when they were being shown and therefore meant nothing until the end, did not like.

As soon as he pulled out the paper with No 67 on it my wife whispered in my ear that Di-Caprio was it and she thought his partner was dodgy.

Totally believe that the majority of people sussed it before the end, wasn't really that hard was it?

Basically I felt it started too slow and that the ending felt rushed.

On a plus, I thought Di-Caprio was as usual bloody excellent and the scene where he found his children in the lake was the most memorable and touching moment of the film.

**SPOILER**

Did he pretend at the end?
My interpretation of the ending is that finally he genuinely understood why he was there, due to the crime that he commited and the make-believe world he created to overcome or even ignore the horror of it all. This was also the explanation given to him by Ben Kingsley.

So, having finally come to terms with the reality and admitted to himself the nastiness of it all, he decides he'd rather "die a great man" (as he believed himself to be in his fabricated world) than "live as a monster" which is the reality he's now faced with.

By pretending to his partner/doctor that he still believes he's a Marshall and not a patient, they'll operate on him as threatened previously in the lighthouse meaning he won't have to suffer the reality of what he's been through.

I really didn't work it out to the end was left unsure all the way to the end.

Shame to those who did work it out as that must have spoiled it lol

Which means that those who worked it out must have known there was a twist in the film.
Me on the other hand just watched it without knowing anything about it and as far as I was concerned it was 2 cops looking for a woman.

I saw this last night and I have to say that I've never been as disappointed with a movie as much as I was with this. I won't spoil anything but I think the last trailer I saw for it showed far too much, and I guessed what was going to happen after about 20 minutes (and I'm not one to spot the twist usually) and then I just wanted it to end. It was well acted and directed but was a big let down for me.

this, i hate the way most movies are for dumb people...

Exactly,

And I had seen the trailer as well but it does help that I was hungover so I couldn't be bothered to overthink.

i didnt previously know there was a twist, but as soon as he took the pills from them little pots like the patients do i had an incling he was a patient, then the clues kept coming, and i was waiting for it to happen.

I saw this tonight with the bf DiCaprio was amazing in it such a talented actor and I have to say from seeing the trailor we had no idea it would pan out the way it did so the twist was a very big suprise to us.

When i watched it i remember trying to work out the 'plot' in the first ten minutes and i was right pretty much but that didnt take away from the movie one bit.
Something about this really gripped me though, it was almost a throw back to the older psychological thrillers where the plot wasnt the last word, the feel of the film is what mattered and i think Scorsese succeeded by the bucket load.

Got the twist as soon as he got on the truck at the beginning.
The Mrs got almost the whole pay off after the first 15 minutes.

Still a good film.

So you must have known there was going to be a twist otherwise every film you ever watch you must always look for a twist.
If you don't know there's a twist then you won't look for it and just let the film pan out.
If somebody told me there was a great twist in a new film they might as well have told me the ending.

We watched this the other day and i enjoyed the quality of the making and acting was superb, it was a little odd and the ending was rather different to what we expected.

Worth watching IMHO.

Saw this with parents and I had no idea there was a twist. But the second he replaced his outfit with the patient white suit we sussed that something was wrong. It was all about the reactions of the stuff and other guests.

half way in i suspected he was a patient due to the nature and frequency of the dream sequences , which made me start questioning which is reality ,as they seemed to get interwoven. very similar to A beautiful mind.

knowing the film has a twist before you see it doesn't help in keeping you from guessing early

i loved this film. its just great film making and great acting.

Just seen this film and thought it was pretty good. Better then most films and definitely worth a watch. Did guess what was going on though...

Saw it and thought it was great, predictable twist aside the filming was fantastic and incredibly atmospheric; once again Scorsese and diCaprio created some stunning work.

Challenges The Departed as one of my favourite recent Scorsese films :)
