Shutter Island

So you must have known there was going to be a twist otherwise every film you ever watch you must always look for a twist.
If you don't know there's a twist then you won't look for it and just let the film pan out.
If somebody told me there was a great twist in a new film they might as well have told me the ending.

Well, you would have to be blind to not know it had a twist.

In this case, it is telegraphed in the scene with the guards as he gets on the truck.
As the film goes on, it tries to bait you into it being one of 4 different ones.

My problem is I don't tell lies.
It would be very easy to say I saw a twist but I thought the twist was the Prison staff making him believe he was mad.
We can all go back to the start of the film and realise where the 'twist' started but if we didn't know there was a twist then I fail to believe anybody 'worked it out' near the beginning.
And if people watch films for twists then a lot of films haven't got them so I conclude that those who worked out the twist early on must have known there was a twist to workout.

Whats this?
I'll ignore the inference to me being a liar, much as I dont join in the gang raping you have to endure when you come out with one of your less well thought out anecdotes, and I'll instead say much as you enjoy and immerse yourself in music, I do the same with movies, I read lots of movie related books (biographies, behind the scenes) and new it was a movie about all not being as it seems.
That is the point of movies like this.

Spoilers:

Have to admit, I wasn't sure which way it was going to go when they were at the top of the lighthouse.

(Him being Sane or Insane).

I haven't called you a liar and I was very careful not to quote anybody and my comment was aimed at me.
Go take your rant elsewhere.

Anyway, you've just admitted you knew there was a twist so working it out early on is a certainty.

I watched it this afternoon with my wife and we both enjoyed it. I thought the atmosphere throughout was pretty creepy and you were never quite sure what was going on until the end. In hindsight there were a few clues but I guess they would become more evident if I were to watch it again.:)

What a rubbish film. Half down to the fact that I had a good idea of what the twist would be even after seeing the trailer, half down to the fact that it was written in a way to make the twist *really* obvious the second time you watch it, hence, if you have a good idea of what it is the first time round, it's just blindingly obvious.

I've only watched it once and I could list a dozen things that happened that make it really obvious. The most obvious:

Spoiler: I mean for god sake, Ben Kingsley explained the entire premise of the film within the first 10 minutes when he meets the marshals. My initial prediction though was that DiCaprio was the janitor at his old apartment and burnt/murdered his wife, so was off on that but still, not a major shock. I knew Ruffalo was his primary carer though: Cop from out of town? Can't use a gun? The other primary left the island the day before? The general way he was acting? Give me a break!

The film would've been much better if it had been written in a way that also throws people with an idea of the twist off the scent.

It's a thriller/horror. What thriller or horror have you ever seen that doesn't have a twist or at least an unexpected revelation at the end? Add on to that the fact that it involves a police investigation (ie a mystery to be solved) and you've got a dead-set twist.

I've underlined the main points and you watched a trailer and watched it a second time.
Some people like myself never ever read about films or watch trailers - EVER mainly because I don't want the film to be ruined.
I usually stay out of the threads to do with new films until I've watched them so I don't have spoilers.
Others also said the trailer gave it away so my point is made - if you work out a twist you already know there is a twist.

I think many of us guessed the twist as the film progressed further to its conclusion. My problem was the way in which the revelation was dealt with - like some sort of patronising step by step lecture of what we 'missed'. For me, It was this sheer self indulgence that spoiled what could have been a very good film.

I wouldn't say that is always true, I watched another movie fairly recently, had no idea what it was really about and didn't know it had a twist. 10 minutes in I thought "that was weird" then something mentioned later made me realise what was going on. Not gonna mention the movie in case I spoil it for anyone but it's not a movie that, looking at the trailer, there is a twist.

I didn't watch the trailer twice . I mean the way the film was written would make the twist very obvious the second time round with something every 5 minutes or so making you think "oh I get that now I know the twist, how clever!". Unfortunately that backfires by constantly reaffirming your guess the first time around, and there was nothing written in to it at all to make me doubt myself.

So are you saying the film wasn't rubbish and the twist wasn't obvious because I watched the trailer?

If you think the film is rubbish then you are absolutely entitled to your opinion but you knew there was a twist because you watched the trailer.

How is that so? It's not like the trailer ends with "THERE'S A TWIST" in massive red letters. After seeing the "...you have a 67th patient" bit my logical thought was that he's it, so I think it's safe to assume that I'd have had the same thought after seeing that bit in the actual film. And that's what, 15 minutes in?

Your words -

What a rubbish film. Half down to the fact that I had a good idea of what the twist would be even after seeing the trailer,

You saw the trailer and knew there was a twist

Thought there would be a twist*. I'm failing to see the point you're trying to make, though?

If you're looking for or expecting the twist, it will make itself far more obvious. If you're going into a film blind, you can view it in an entirely different perspective.

I'm like dmpoole here, I went to see it off the back of nothing more than hearing 'its pretty good', I didn't even really know what genre of film it was going to be, so various things that other people claim make it 'obvious' what the twist was, I was interpreting completely differently whilst watching the film.

Spoilers:

For a good part of the film, I was expecting it to go the way of him being 'captured' and made to believe he was (or made to be) insane for a yet to be revealed motive, rather than the whole thing being an elaborate experiment to try and help an existing patient.

You will have to read all the posts above.
Posters came on claiming they worked out the twist early on and several mentioned the trailer gave it away.
Others like myself didn't see the twist until the end of the film because we weren't armed with a) seeing the trailer b) knowing there was a twist.
We just watched it as another film.
There was a feeling in the thread of 'You are thick because you didn't work out the twist' so my point remains - if you watched the trailer or read about the film then you would look for a twist from early on where I knew nothing and had a nice surprise at the end (like I did with The Others).
